YHA accommodation FAQ's
Where are YHA hostels located?
There are many YHA hostels located throughout England & Wales. Choose from a stay in the peaceful, middle-of-nowhere at YHA Black Sail in the Lake District right through to a busy and bustling vibe in the middle of London at YHA London Central.
Whether you’re a fan of the coast or the countryside, a city break or a rural escape, we have something for you. And best of all, a stay with the YHA helps further our charitable objective of ensuring that everybody has the opportunity to connect to nature, heritage and the great outdoors.
How do I find the best YHA hostel for my trip?
Finding the best YHA hostel for your next trip depends on a number of factors:
- When you want to travel
- Where you’d like to visit
- How long you’d like to stay for
- How many are in your group
- What your budget is
- What you’d like to do when you get there
Once you have an idea of these factors, you can easily search for the best matching accommodation online and then filter the results to find your perfect match. Online booking is the quickest way to secure your accommodation. Best of all, it’s available 24/7.
Which YHA hostels are best for families?
YHA hostels are absolutely perfect for families with young children as well as older children. Whether you love a day on a beach, a walk in the countryside or just chilling with friends, there’s a YHA to suit every family.
Families love our free Wi-Fi, communal lounges and self catering kitchens (perfect for rustling up budget friendly meals for everyone) as well as the opportunity to meet lots of new friends.
You can book a family-friendly private room (many of which come with en-suite bathrooms) as well as take advantage of our offer where kids eat from as little as £1 (T&Cs apply).
Which YHA hostels are best for walkers, cyclists and outdoor adventures?
You might expect us to say that every hostel has something to offer walkers, cyclists and outdoor adventurists. But it’s actually true! Of course, if you’re bagging all the Wainwrights then you’ll need to head to the Lake District. And if it’s hostel accommodation in Wales you’re after then you’re spoilt for choice. But even our city centre locations offer walking fans a good day out. Have you ever tried running up the Covent Garden Tube staircase?! This infamous London rite of passage up a spiral staircase consists of exactly 193 steps—the equivalent of climbing a 15-story building.
Which YHA hostels are closest to National Parks and hiking trails?
There are 13 National Parks in England and Wales combined: 10 in England and 3 in Wales.
We’ve got hostels in all 3 of the National Parks in Wales:
- Bannau Brycheiniog (formerly known as the Brecon Beacons)
- Eryri (Snowdonia)
- Pembrokeshire Coast
And we’ve got hostels in no less than 7 of the 10 National Parks in England:
- Lake District
- New Forest
- North York Moors
- Northumberland
- Peak District
- South Downs
- Yorkshire Dales
Can’t find a hostel exactly in the National Park you’re looking for? There’s bound to be one just on the edge.
Which YHA hostels have private rooms?
Most hostels offer private rooms alongside shared dorm rooms. And many of these private rooms come with ensuite facilities too. Check each hostel listing for more information.
What facilities do YHA hostels offer?
YHA hostels are absolutely packed with facilities for making your stay as enjoyable as possible. Whilst each hostel is different, which means you’ll need to double check a listing to make sure, most hostels offer:
- Well equipped self catering kitchens where you can both store food and cook up your favourite meal – perfect if you’re watching those pennies
- On site cafés, licensed bars and restaurants, serving breakfast, lunch and dinner
- Free Wi-Fi in communal spaces
- Parking – either off road or on street
- Laundry facilities
- Bike storage
- Drying rooms
- Water refill stations
- Glamping and camping accommodation
Some hostels even offer EV charging, indoor play areas and Lake views. Just filter your results by your chosen facility to find out more.
Are YHA hostels dog friendly?
Only well trained Assistance Dogs are allowed in hostel bedrooms or kitchens. Please let us know if you plan to bring an Assistance Dog (no charge) during the booking process.
Otherwise, dogs are welcome to stay at many of our Camping & Cabins sites as well as many of our Exclusive Hire sites.
Which YHA hostels are accessible for disabled guests?
We have many YHA hostels which offer accessible accommodation, making them suitable for wheelchair users and people with mobility impairments. Please note that this does vary hostel to hostel. For more details on each individual hostel, please read the access statement.
Can you stay at a YHA hostel if you're not a member?
Yes of course, all YHA hostels welcome both members and non members.
If you’d like to join YHA as a member you’ll be able to take full advantage of all our special offers and discounts. Membership starts from as little as £10 a year (Youth Annual (Direct Debit) Membership) and you can then immediately save 10% on your accommodation booking as well as hot meals!
Plus you’ll be helping us meet our charitable objective of transforming young lives forever through travel and real adventure.
