Regular camping and hostelling trips as a child marked the start of Barney’s relationship with the outdoors and his love of being amongst nature. Since then, family holidays with his own children have typically involved various hiking and cycling adventures, and staying in YHA and international hostel facilities continues to play its part in these adventures.

Barney is a certified Mountain Leader and Mountain Bike Guide, and has supported groups of youths from disadvantaged backgrounds and people with physical disabilities to access the outdoors. He is also a keen cyclist and triathlete as both a participant and a coach, and has coached a range of youth sports groups and clubs.

Professionally, Barney has spent his career working in technology. Most recently he has been working within cyber security and technology transformation for a major international bank, leading global functions to modernise technology and protect the bank’s data and systems from cyber attacks.

In his spare time you’ll generally find Barney on his bike, walking his dog, or trying to learn Italian.
