Places to stay in Leeds

Serving as the financial and commercial heart of Yorkshire, Leeds is the perfect place for fine dining, great nights out and seemingly limitless shopping experiences. It's also a great for sports enthusiasts, as it is the home to Leeds United Football Club, Leeds Rhinos (rugby league) and Carnegie (rugby union), as well as Yorkshire Cricket Club - the lattermost of which regularly hosts the England cricket team at its home ground of Headingley.

With close links to York, Bradford and the Yorkshire Dales, Leeds could be the perfect base of operations for a true Yorkshire adventure, though that's not to say that Leeds has little to offer - in fact, you could spend days in the city without running out of things to do!

Whether they're after the hustle and bustle of the city, the surroundings of the famed Kirkstall Brewery or the quieter seclusion of Leeds Metropolitan University's campus in Headingley, there's a little something of everything for travellers to West Yorkshire.

Five Free Things To Do In Leeds

The Royal Armouries
This museum is home to the national collection of arms and armour, focused around five themed galleries: war, tournament, self-defence, hunting and many examples of Oriental weaponry. In the warmer months, you can also see mediaeval jousting tournaments!

Temple Newsam
This house and estate is a prime example of Tudor-Jacobean architecture and has grounds landscaped by Capability Brown. The estate also hosts facilities for sports such as football, golf, cycling, horse-riding and orienteering, while a neighbouring park is perfect for children.

Roundhay Park
As one of the biggest city parks in Europe, Roundhay's premier attraction in north-east Leeds is one of the most popular gathering places in the region - around one million people visit every year. It is also home to Tropical World, which has the largest collection of tropical plants in the UK outside Kew Gardens - as well as plenty of birds, butterflies, reptiles and animals.

Leeds City Museum
Housed in the old Mechanics' Institute built by city architect Cuthbert Brodrick, the museum was reopened in 2008 and holds countless seasonal exhibitions, alongside fixed displays belonging to the Leeds Archive.

A short train ride away from the city, Saltaire is a Victorian model village designed by philanthropist Sir Titus Salt; it’s beautiful architecture, surrounding the serene Leeds-Liverpool Canal, has since been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
