If you’re looking for fresh air and fun during your city break to York, then add a trip to Rowntree Park to your itinerary. This huge 20-acre outdoor space has plenty to keep the whole family entertained, including play areas, a skate park, and wildlife walks.

Rowntree Park is free to visit and offers a scenic escape from the city. Couples and solo travellers can take leisurely strolls while admiring the beautiful gardens, while children can let off steam on one of the many play areas.

What is the history of Rowntree Park?

Rowntree Park first opened in 1921 and was York’s first municipal park. The park was a gift from Joseph Rowntree, the chocolate manufacturer and one of the biggest employers in York in the 1920s.

The park was intended as a memorial to the people who worked at Cocoa Works who died in World War I.

In 2003, Rowntree Park was refurbished with a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund. Some of the historical elements were refurbished and new additions included sculptures, a basketball court, and a skatepark.

Who owns Rowntree Park?

Rowntree Park is owned and managed by York Council. An active group of supporters, called the Friends of Rowntree Park, runs community events and maintains some of the areas in the park.

Can I get something to eat at Rowntree Park?

Yes, the Rowntree Park Reading Café is situated in Rowntree Park Lodge in the park. This family-friendly venue serves home-cooked meals, including breakfast, made using fresh, locally sourced ingredients wherever possible.

It’s not just a place to grab a bite to eat and a drink, though. The café also has a full library service, so you can pick up a book and spend some time reading. They run a variety of events and activities throughout the year that are often free to attend.

Of course, if you’d prefer to bring something with you, there are lots of places in the park where you can pitch up for a picnic. Make use of the self-catering facilities at YHA York to prepare a delicious spread to bring with you.

You’ll be spoilt for choice for things to do at Rowntree Park – there is so much fun to be had!

Skatepark

Bring your board or get your skates on to try out this back-and-forth style concrete plaza skatepark. The skatepark is suitable for skaters, BMXers, and scooter riders. The park has areas suitable for all abilities, and some of the exciting features include:

Quarter pipes and banks
Ledges and rails
Ramps and funboxes

Children’s play area

The children’s play area has equipment for both younger and older kids, including climbing frames, slides, swings, and even a zip line. While the kids are playing, adults can chill out on one of the many park benches, keeping an eye on them and soaking up the tranquil surroundings.

Tennis courts

Channel your inner Andy Murray or Katie Boulter with a couple of sets at the tennis courts in Rowntree Park. The courts are available to hire for a fee, and you can bring your own racquets and balls.

Basketball court

If you prefer a dribble to a backhand, then get yourself to the basketball courts. The courts are free to use and there’s no need to book.

Admire the gardens

Take a relaxed wander through the beautiful gardens and enjoy spotting the different plants and flowers. The gardens look different throughout the year as they change with the season, and they are at their most vibrant during spring and summer.

Float your boat

Rowntree Park features an ornamental lake complete with ducks, swans and geese. Half of the lake is available for use by model boats so why not bring along your own to join the flotilla?

The Friends of Rowntree Park run a whole host of events each year. Events and activities include:

How to get to Rowntree Park from YHA York

Rowntree Park is about two miles from YHA York.

On foot: It takes around 45 minutes to walk from YHA York to Rowntree Park.

Cycling: It’s about a 14-minute cycle from the Youth Hostel to the park.

By public transport: From YHA York, walk for about 12 minutes to the bus stop at Salisbury Road. Catch the 59 Poppleton Bar Park & Ride bus, alighting at Clifford Street. From here, it’s approximately 15 minutes on foot to Rowntree Park.

By car: It takes about 14 minutes to drive to Rowntree Park from YHA York. There is a pay and display car park at Rowntree Park, with accessible parking spaces available. You can pay by phone.
