YHA's FIRST Impact Review

YHA's FIRST Impact Review

YHA held the launch of their first Impact Review last week at Central Hall in Westminster. Because of YHA’s long and wonderful history it is hard to have a “first” because often things have been done before. Our CEO Caroline White can categorically say that this was YHA’s first Impact Review and the first such high profile political event YHA has hosted.

This is the first time that YHA has been able to demonstrably show the positive difference they make to the lives of our core beneficiaries – young people.

At our fabulous launch event last week, John Mann MP for Bassetlaw and Chair of our All Party Parliamentary Group spoke passionately about YHA, the young people who had benefited in his constituency and how all the audience could help by staying in YHA!

Emma Boggis who is CEO of the Sport and Recreation Alliance also spoke. She was formerly head of the Olympic and Paralympic legacy unit and prior to that in the Cabinet Office as private secretary to David Cameron. She is leading on developing the outdoor recreation strategy for the Minister of Sport Tourism and Heritage, Tracey Crouch. Emma underlined the importance of YHA’s work, particularly the benefits we contribute to the physical and mental health of young people and how our Impact Review will make a real contribution in the development of the Government's strategy.

But the star of the event was Joe Willis who was interviewed, in front of the 100 people at the event, about his YHA Summer Camp experience at YHA Coalbrookdale.

Joe already climbs and abseils with his dad so he chose the Go Extreme camp where he could do new activities. His favourites were quad biking and Segwaying. He spoke so well about his experience at camp and about how his friend who was so shy and would only talk to Joe and their roommates at the start of the week, was friends with everyone by the end of camp.

Trying and enjoying new experiences, improving confidence and developing strong relationships are all at the heart of the positive impact YHA has on young lives.

If you have not read the Impact Review do please make some time. It is now available on YHA's website – and there are 2 copies at every Youth Hostel.

If you would like more copies or information about the review then contact Sam Littlechilds at [email protected]

Remember - it is your hard work that ensures YHA can talk to the media and politicians so confidently about YHA's impact. We hope you’re as proud as we are.
