Sarah Outen MBE

Who is Sarah Outen?

Sarah Outen MBE is a British athlete and adventurer. She is also a bestselling author and motivational speaker in the UK and internationally. Sarah was the first woman and the youngest person to row solo across the Indian Ocean and also the Pacific Ocean from Japan to Alaska. She completed a round-the-world journey, under her own power, by rowing boat, bicycle and kayak, in November 2015.

An adventurer by land and sea, Sarah is keen to encourage people outside and enable young people to access adventure; she is a proud ambassador of YHA. In November 2015 Sarah completed her most recent major expedition: London2London: Via the World - an attempt to row, cycle and kayak 25000 miles around the Northern Hemisphere. The journey took 4.5 years and was all the richer for not turning out exactly as planned.

Sarah says:

When things are really tough or scary, you know they’re not going to last forever, so if you can keep holding on for the better times, that’s really powerful. You have to celebrate small successes and the fact that you’re still going.

What is Sarah up to with YHA?

Sarah recently met with young people from a school in Wakefield who were having a school trip adventure at the fabulous YHA Edale – talking to them about her adventures and the exciting things they had done during their stay with YHA. She also gave an inspiration talk to our YHA Summer Camp volunteers at their training weekend at Edale recently, and will be taking part in one of our Summer Camps at YHA South Downs.

Sarah gave the key note speech at YHA’s AGM in 2017.
