Places to stay in Cambridge

Cambridge is a historic university town with a wealth of history and heritage to discover, as well as a number of attractions for children and adults alike. While many of the university's museums offer free entry (perfect for rainy afternoons), the surrounding countryside also offers much in the way of activities and opportunities. Cambridge is often referred to as "bike city" thanks to its excellent bicycle paths and road markings, so even if you do want to stay within the city, there are still plenty of chances to stay active and explore!

Our YHA Cambridge hostel is situated just outside the centre of the town, making it the ideal location for a family break, offering somewhere to retreat to after a day of exploring. Set in a large brick town house with private rooms and self-catering facilities, it's an excellent way to see Cambridge with the family.

Five Free Things To Do In Cambridge

Parks and gardens
Cambridge is home to a number of green spaces; visit Jesus Green in the centre of town, or head out to the rather grand Grantchester Meadows for an afternoon in the sun.

"The Backs"
"The Backs" refers to the area behind the university college buildings which face out onto the River Cam. It's a beautiful area for a walk along the river, with gardens, cobbled paths and a number of majestic buildings along the way.

Fitzwilliam Museum
Fitzwilliam Museum is a stunning museum containing an impressive collection of antiquities, including Egyptian artefacts and medieval weapons. The children's facilities make it an ideal visit for an educational afternoon or even just a day out of the sun.

Cambridge Castle
Cambridge Castle now only consists of the original motte and some segments of wall, leading to the local name "Castle Mound". The ten-metre mound offers stunning views over the otherwise flat city, and is the perfect place for a picnic.

Wandlebury Country Park
For a day further out in the countryside, head to Wandlebury Country Park, a beautiful area of woodland and meadows that also boats a wide variety of wildlife and even the remains of an Iron Age fort.
