YHA Annual General Meeting in Manchester

YHA’s Annual General Meeting in Manchester on Saturday 14th July accepted proposals to open the Annual General Meeting in future to a wider membership and elected four trustees to join the Board.

The meeting took place on one of the year’s sunniest days at the Museum of Science and Industry in Manchester in a great atmosphere of good will and cooperation.

The AGM agreed in principle both to opening up the AGM to a wider membership as well as a review of Regional and Wales Councils. The Board will discuss these principles with Regional and Wales Councils during the coming year with a view to some formal changes coming to next year’s AGM.

One trustee, James Blake, who has been a trustee since 2002, was re-elected and three new trustees were elected. They were; Fran Miles, a senior strategist at the communications agency AMV DDBO; Vinay Talwar, a career diplomat in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office; and Paul Wright, who works in an IT company and is Chairman of YHA’s Southern Region.

Caroline White, Chief Executive, delivered a review of the year to the meeting and Alan Bourne presented the Trustee’s Annual Report. links

Rt Hon Richard Caborn, YHA President, congratulated YHA on the very positive picture for the year. He stated that YHA is well run on sound principles, taking the basic values of YHA into the modern world. He also commented on the wide support YHA enjoys politically with the Foreign Secretary, the Government’s Chief Whip and John Mann all supporting YHA along with a record number of other MPs. Not many have that kind of support, Mr Caborn said.

The AGM meets to receive the annual accounts, to appoint honorary officers, consider and vote on any motions, and to elect the Board of Trustees and its officers. The Regional and Wales Councils nominate delegates to the AGM, as well as the Affiliate Groups and a small number of Affiliated Societies, such as Ramblers and Girl Guiding UK.
