Saturday 4th October 2025
Distance: 4 miles (6.4 km)
Duration: 8 hours
Led by: Rose Gare-Simmons, BMC Ambassador for Hill Walking
Skills and confidence
We will start the day with a classroom-based session looking at the basics of hill skills, navigation and safety in the mountains through fun games and exploring safety scenarios and decision making in the mountains. After lunch we will head out for a group hike where we will continue the learning with some practical hands-on practice of our new navigation skills.
This will be a 4-mile/6.4 km circular route and will include an ascent and descent of around 420m, so a moderate level of fitness will be required. The walk will be at a relaxed pace with plenty of opportunity to stop for activities, photos, snacks and short breaks. Please be aware that the walk will include a mixture of terrain and landscapes with the potential for uneven ground, rough terrain, stiles, stream crossings, fields and hills, tracks and lanes; we may experience adverse weather conditions. Every effort is made to minimise potential hazards; however, the very nature of hill and mountain walking involves a certain level of unavoidable risk of accident and/or injury.
Please ensure you are well equipped for all weathers. A suggested kit list will be sent out to all participants.
