This relaxed and friendly Introduction to map reading and navigation is designed for people with little or no previous experience and is perfect for complete beginners. We will cover the fundamentals of map reading and navigation in a supportive environment before heading out onto the fells to put everything into practice.

Starting from YHA Ambleside, we'll spend the first 45 minutes indoors to introduce the map, understand map symbols, learn how to orientate the map, and cover the basic skills you'll need before we head outside. We'll then enjoy a steady walk up Loughrigg Fell, using the route as an outdoor classroom to practise things like recognising features on the map and identifying them on the ground; using simple route descriptions; measuring distance and estimating walking times. The route involves around 10km of walking and approximately 300m of height gain.

There'll be plenty of opportunities to ask questions and practise the skills throughout the day, with no pressure and a pace suitable for beginners. Children are very welcome when accompanied by a parent or guardian. You will need food and drink, waterproofs, walking boots or sturdy footwear and clothing appropriate for the weather forecast.
