Eskdale is a stunning Lake District valley of mountains, rivers and forests with England's highest mountain - Scafell Pike at its head. It is a mixed landscape, going from uneven and volcanic uplands, through much broader land and down to its wide-open brook at Ravenglass, making camping in Eskdale the perfect break for lovers of the outdoors.
The natural beauty is a stunning playground for walkers with paths that are demanding or gentle and plenty in between. Eskdale cycle trail makes exploring easy if cycling is your interest. One of the Lake District's most popular tourist attractions, the Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway, runs through the valley making Eskdale very popular with tourists. Whether it is a romantic getaway or a trip away with friends, Eskdale is the place for you.

Why not try our YHA Eskdale campsite? Located on the edge of the Lake District's most awe-inspiring wilderness area, but with a choice of good pubs within walking distance, YHA Eskdale’s camping grounds are the best of both worlds. Set in 15 acres of private grounds, the campsite is on the doorstep of the highest and most challenging Lakeland peaks.
There are two small, private pitches available beside a beautiful stream and then two more over the bridge which were lovingly prepared by volunteers from the Bolsover Woodland Trust, both suitable for bijou camping in two-person tents. This is wild camping - but with great facilities which campers have 24-hour access to.
Things to do in Eskdale
Ride from the foot of the Scafell range against rivers, meadows and the historic oak woods of the Eskdale Valley. Cycling in Eskdale is great.
Whitehaven is a lovely, heritage Georgian town. Don't miss the Beacon visitors centre and The Rum Story for a fun day out for the family.
Walking and rambling
Explore beautiful Eskdale and enjoy the paths along the River Esk. Along the way there's lots of waterfalls, beautiful Lakeland scenery and fabulous views from the high points.
Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway
Known as the most beautiful train journey in England, this railway travels seven miles, from the old Roman Port of Ravenglass along the Eskdale Valley to Eskdale. Experience the heritage steam engines on a scenic day out at Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway.
