Places to stay in Carlisle

Famous for its close proximity to Hadrian's Wall, Carlisle is a historical city with plenty to offer any family. Children will love exploring the city's castle and ancient walls to get a taste of Roman life, before stretching their legs in the vast, sprawling countryside of the Lake District.

If having the whole of Cumbria on your doorstep is not enough, the Scottish border is a mere ten miles north, so you always have the option of visiting a different country should you require a change of scenery.

Five Free Things To Do In Carlisle

Lake District National Park
Located just to the south of the city, the Lake District National Park is one of the nation's favourite natural treasures, with enough walks, climbs and wildlife to keep even the most demanding child entertained.

Rickerby Park
Speaking of wildlife, Rickerby Park is famed for its popularity with the now sadly diminished otter population, so be sure to take a trip to the park to make your trip to Carlisle truly memorable.

Hadrian's Wall
Any trip to Carlisle would not be complete without a visit to its most famous landmark - Hadrian's Wall. Stretching all the way from Carlisle in the west to Wallsend in the east, this Roman Wall is one of the north's premier tourist attractions.

Carlisle Castle
Kids love castles. That is fact. Therefore they will love to explore the famous Carlisle Castle, complete with perimeter wall walkway and much more! Free for British Heritage members.

Bitts Park
For the best play area in the region, look no further than Bitts Park. Set alongside the River Eden in the Hadrian's Wall National Park, Bitts also comes complete with tennis courts, putting courses and small football pitches - perfect for the active family.
