Berwick Visual Arts Announces L.S Lowry Berwick and Northumberland

A major new exhibition of the artist’s work taking place at the Granary Gallery, YHA Berwick, Berwick-upon-Tweed this summer.

Berwick Visual Arts has announced a major exhibition of original works by L.S Lowry this summer celebrating his connections to the town and the wider North-East of England.

Lowry is one of the UK’s best loved artists, famous for his industrial scenes of the North of England. It is less well known that he had a great love for the North-East of England and was a regular visitor to the area from the 1930’s onwards.

During this period he spent time in Middlesbrough, Sunderland, Newcastle and the North-East coast, with his first recorded visit to Berwick-upon-Tweed in 1936. He particularly liked the town, depicting its narrow streets, lanes and Georgian buildings many times over the years. He also included paintings from Berwick in his first solo exhibition in London and even contemplated buying a house in town.

'L.S. Lowry in Berwick & Northumberland' will bring together for the first time a number of original works produced by Lowry during his time in Berwick, to the town itself. These will be accompanied by further works produced in Northumberland, the wider North-East and also works exploring his fascination with the sea.

Berwick Visual Arts has been working closely with The Lowry in Salford to secure loans of over 20 works for the exhibition, alongside works loaned by The Lowry Estate and Sunderland Museum & Art Gallery.

James Lowther, Head of Visual Art for Berwick Visual Arts said, "We are delighted to be able to bring a number of original works produced by Lowry of Berwick to the town for the first time and celebrate his strong connections to the town.

"This is certain to be one of our most popular exhibitions to date and certainly helps us achieve our aim of bringing the best modern and contemporary art to Northumberland."

L.S. Lowry runs at The Granary Gallery, 2nd Floor, YHA Berwick, Dewars Lane, TD15 1AJ from Saturday 21st June until Sunday 21st September 2014. The exhibition is open from 11am-5pm every Wednesday to Sunday with free admission.
