The Transformation of YHA Boggle Hole's Annex

The Transformation of YHA Boggle Hole's Annex

YHA Boggle Hole is one of our best-loved hostels and it now boasts a fantastic new annex – aptly named ‘The Crow’s Nest’. With pirate-themed decor, stories of Yorkshire smugglers and a beach literally on the doorstep, this Youth Hostel is legendary in our network. The hostel is set in a secluded woodland cove and boasts a sea view café, woodburning stove and dozens of quirky touches to make it special.

The addition of The Crow’s Nest was one of the biggest changes to YHA Boggle Hole during its makeover in 2014. This impressive new structure not only looks amazing, but it is much more environmentally-friendly than the previous building. With its perfect location for traditional family holidays, the hostel was really being let down by its tired old annex and something had to be done. Here’s the story behind the transformation…

The hostel’s unique location provides truly magical seaside adventures, but it also makes building anything new very challenging. Demolishing the old annex was difficult in itself and our remote site can only be reached via a beach that is heavily tidal. This meant that only certain vehicles could reach the site at specific times of day, unless they wanted to be caught by the waves! Trickier still, all materials then had to be transported up a small road at the side of the hostel to the annex’s hilltop location.

After much planning, YHA Boggle Hole set up a ground-breaking project to replace the run down annex with The Crow’s Nest. Members of YHA, building consultants and onsite managers all got involved with a project group to overcome the challenges. We developed a cost-effective plan that worked with the beach and tides, along with sticking to our Green Spirit Plan – a commitment to reduce YHA’s environmental impact and make the most of the natural environment. The National Parks and National Trust were also a huge help; sharing their knowledge and ideas with us throughout the project.

With careful scheduling to dodge the tides and a dedicated on-site project manager, the eight month construction project was a big success. In total, the renovation cost £1.2 million, including funding from Coastal Communities, a private donor, a grant from Hostelling International and the YHA itself. We now have an energy-efficient annex with modern insulation, window vents for circulation, an air source heat pump and solar panels.

If you’re staying in The Crow’s Nest, check out the educational panels to find out why our new sustainable features are so important. We can confidently say that our energy needs and emissions have been greatly reduced since the replacement.

The stylish annex boasts stunning valley views, state of the art facilities and a striking new look. Its timber frame is surrounded by woodland – ideal for morning wildlife spotting.

Best of all, YHA Boggle Hole has been receiving better customer feedback than ever before.
