Overview
Situated in the heart of the Peak District National Park, YHA Castleton Losehill Hall is a fully refurbished gothic mansion, set within 27 acres of parkland and offering stunning views across its picturesque surroundings. Most of the grounds are pastureland currently used for grazing livestock from a nearby farm, so you may see some sheep up close.
Castleton itself is one of the Peak District’s most charming villages, with Peveril Castle, plenty of small, independent shops and numerous pubs for guests to explore and enjoy. Castleton is also famed for its caves and caverns, most notably the Blue John Cavern, and is a haven for walkers, with walks up Mam Tor among a vast range of routes.

Set within 27 acres of stunning parkland in the heart of the Peak District, YHA Castleton Losehill Hall is one of YHA’s premier education centres and perfect for schools and groups. The hostel is a Victorian mansion which offers a mix of great facilities and period glamour.
This hostel is great for all types of groups. For younger school groups, we offer a range of packages including history, geography, discovery, Alex Rider and multi-activity sessions, all delivering quality educational activities. If you are a self-led, older school or non-educational group looking for a base to explore, there are three show caves, Chatsworth House, Peveril’s Castle and the tourist honeypot of Castleton all nearby.

Most of our bedrooms are dormitory style rooms with bunk beds. We always try to allocate bedrooms close together and will never ask your group to share bedrooms with anyone not in your group.
Upgrades are available for sole use of an area, floor or the entire place.
Shared spaces
Our accommodation is split evenly between three accommodation blocks: Ashton, Burbridge and Mews. We also have free Wi-Fi, quiet rooms, games and meeting rooms plus plenty of outdoor space and our own goat!

With tasty breakfasts, packed lunches and evening meals, groups are sure to find something delicious to eat at YHA Castleton Losehill Hall (see sample menu).
Meal plans range from bed and breakfast up to full-board catering. Vegetarian options are available and we aim to cater for any special dietary requests.

Reception opening hours: From 07:30 - 22:00.
Food and drink: Breakfast is served to guests from 07:30 – 09:00 daily. Meals are also available from 17:00 – 20:00.
Licensed bar: This hostel has a licensed bar offering a range of alcohol and soft drinks. It is not possible for guests to bring their own alcohol, except when hiring the whole hostel through YHA Exclusive Hire.
Self-catering: Guests have access to a self-catering kitchen.

History
YHA Castleton Losehill Hall started life as a gentleman’s residence for Squire Ashton, the son of the family who lived in Castleton Hall in the centre of the village, coincidentally the home of the YHA before we moved up to Losehill.
Built in 1882, it has been extended since to include the arched mews building. The formal gardens were laid out in Victorian times and have a well preserved boundary. The parkland is a scheduled ancient monument as it is an example of a Saxon/medieval ridge and furrow field system. The ridges are still clearly visible as you stroll around the park.
The village of Castleton dates back 900 years, it was built around Peveril Castle by William Peveril, son of William the conqueror and has much of its medieval grid pattern and town ditch still intact and preserved. The hillfort on Mam Tor is older still, built 3,000 years ago by the Celtic Brigante tribe. It is a great place to watch the sunrise or set. There is a replica celtic settlement in the grounds of Losehill Hall.
