Make the most of early autumn mornings at YHA

Misty morning countryside landscape

YHA Manchester

Perfect for: canal strolls and hot yoga

This property is set right next to the canal at Castlefield. Pick up a takeaway coffee from our YHA café, and begin your morning with a 1.5 mile self-guided walk from the hostel. This may be a short walk, but you’ve got the perfect start to a day of exploration. It takes in so much — canal bridges, Roman ruins, art galleries, and the Castlefield Viaduct.

If you’re craving something active, a hot yoga class at nearby The Life Centre is a refreshing way to wake your body. Classes run from 7.30am and include sun salutations with an emphasis on connecting the breath with movement (vinyasa). It’s practised in a warm studio (around 38 degrees) and perfect for everyone and all abilities.

This leaves the rest of the day to wander the city’s museums, markets, and autumn streets.

Brilliant for: its artistic past and coastal wildlife spotting

Step straight out of the hostel and onto the Elizabethan ramparts. This circular walk passes many of Berwick-upon-Tweed’s historical attractions and gives an excellent overview of the town’s complex past. These are the best-preserved bastioned town walls in Britain which are ideal for an atmospheric, scenic morning stroll.

Berwick’s historic walls and quiet streets make an ideal spot to embrace autumn’s slower pace. Discover the places that inspired artist L.S. Lowry, who regularly visited Berwick, and look out for the buildings and scenes that featured in his paintings.

Art lovers will appreciate that YHA Berwick is housed in a converted granary and features its own art gallery, showcasing local and international work. What a way to start the day with a dose of creativity!

Enjoy breakfast at the Granary Bistro, the hostel’s café, which opens at 7:30am, serving hot drinks and hearty breakfasts. Perfect before taking a fresh morning walk along the coast. Join the Northumberland Coast Path from Berwick to Cocklawburn Beach for sea views, sand dunes, and birdwatching opportunities. You really have everything in this location  —  coast, city, and it’s located on the borders of Scotland so it takes just over 40 minutes on the train to Edinburgh.

The place for: lake reflections and peaceful starts

Few sights are more magical than sunrise over Lake Windermere. Grab your favourite hot drink from our café, wrap up warm, and find a quiet spot by the jetty for a peaceful breakfast picnic. Later, take a boat trip across the lake, watching the mountains glow in the early light. Ambleside is a haven for anyone wanting a tranquil morning in nature.

Alternatively, a popular sunrise hike is Loughrigg Fell with panoramic views over Windermere and the surrounding fells. The light here in the early morning is stunning.

For families, why not try a short woodland walk through Skelghyll Woods with views over Windermere from Jenkins Crag and get back in time for an all you can eat breakfast, where kids eat for just £1*!

Great for: avoiding the crowds and historic walks

Early morning in Chester is ideal for exploring the city's historic sites like walking the Chester City Walls or strolling through Grosvenor Park and along the River Dee. You can also get a different perspective by walking the Chester Rows or visiting the Chester Cathedral before it gets busy. For a more active start, consider a kayaking tour on the River Dee.

For shoppers Cheshire Oaks Designer Outlet is generally quieter in the mornings, especially before 11am on weekdays (Monday to Friday). This is considered the best time to visit if you're looking to avoid crowds, long queues, and busy car parks.

There are also 14 acres of organic grounds at the hostel, complete with nature walks and landscaped gardens to explore on a frosty morning.

Best for: awesome coastal energy

Wake up to the sound of waves at Broad Haven, where the beach stretches out from the front door. Start your day by watching the sunrise over the Pembrokeshire cliffs — a moment that will stay with you long after you leave.

For a more energetic morning why not book a surf lesson with Pembrokeshire Surf School. Autumn brings Atlantic swells to the west-facing beaches making it one of the best seasons to surf. With summer gone, even if you don’t surf, you’ll have long stretches of the beach to yourself.

Explore the Pembrokeshire coastal path from the hostel’s front door, or at low tide, walk the half mile over the sand to Little Haven with its quaint fishermen’s cottages and quayside. If you're feeling peckish, enjoy your breakfast with a stunning sea view at our Haven's Beach Café.

Great for: cycle paths and Georgian history

Ride through misty tunnels and leafy lanes on the Bath-to-Bristol cycle path, early mornings are the perfect time to explore it. For a more mindful start to the day, try The Soul Spa which offers guided meditation and sound baths from late morning. Or stroll through Royal Victoria Park and admire the golden foliage and to visit the Botanical Gardens.

Bath is famous for its honey-coloured Georgian architecture and literary connections — especially to Jane Austen, who lived here from 1801 to 1806. Autumn mornings are ideal for exploring this side of the city before the crowds arrive.

You mustn’t leave the city without doing the circular walk to see the panoramic views over the Bath Skyline, which are spectacular.

Wonderful for: misty Peak District magic

Nestled in the heart of the Peak District, Ilam Hall is perfect for early morning hikes. Trails wind through rolling hills and woodlands, set off early to avoid the crowds and enjoy the magical mist over the River Dove. Cross the iconic stepping stones and explore the limestone gorge. If you visit before 10am you’ll be rewarded with the place almost to yourself.

Or go for a short but steep climb up Thorpe Cloud with panoramic views over Dovedale and the surrounding hills. It’s ideal for sunrise or early morning light — fewer people and stunning photo opportunities. This is quite a steep climb and is best done in dry weather.
