Places to stay in Telford

The Telford area is a history lover's dream. The site offers no fewer than ten museums: Blists Hill Victorian Town, Enginuity, Coalport China Museum, Jackfield Tile Museum, Coalbrookdale Museum of Iron, Museum of The Gorge, Darby Houses, Tar Tunnel, The Iron Bridge & Tollhouse, and Broseley Pipeworks.

Telford itself is continuing its impressive regeneration and boasts excellent shopping facilities, among other outdoor opportunities in the surrounding countryside, intersected by the beautiful River Severn.

If you want to land right in the heart of the Industrial Revolution, then the YHA's two stunning hostels near Telford are perfect for you. YHA Ironbridge Coalport and Coalbrookdale are themselves historically important to the area; YHA Coalport occupies the oldest surviving Coalport china works building, while the groups-only YHA Coalbrookdale sits inside a wonderful Victorian building with modern facilities on the Ironbridge Gorge World Heritage Site, where you're just a stone's throw from one of the ten museums to explore.


Five Free Things To Do In Telford

The Iron Bridge
This phenomenal UNESCO World Heritage Site is far up the River Severn, where the Iron Bridge - It the first arch bridge in the world to be made of cast iron - still stands. While cars can no longer drive over it, pedestrians can cross free of charge.

Telford Steam Railway
This heritage railway is found in Horsehay, Telford and was created in 1976. Operated on Sundays and Bank Holidays from Easter to the end of September - as well as at Christmas - this registered charity showcases some of the most beautiful steam engines in the UK.

Town Park
Just ten minutes' walk from Telford's main bus station and a five-minute drive from Telford Central railway station, Town Park has undergone remarkable regeneration and has been designated a local nature reserve owing to its 62-hectare range of woodland, heathland and pools.

The Olympian Trail
In nearby Much Wenlock in Shropshire is the home of the modern Olympic Games. Dr William Penny Brookes, a local doctor who campaigned to revive the ancient Greek games, started it all here.

White Ladies Priory
This site shows the remains of a late 12th-century church of a small priory of Augustinian canonesses, which continues to be surrounded by beautiful woodland.
