Hostel of the Week Archive: YHA Ravenstor

Discover a home from home hidden in the Peak District - YHA Ravenstor has a welcome as warm as its roaring log fires. Perfectly placed near the Monsal Trail, our remote National Trust country house makes a fab base for adventurous families and groups. Prepare for spectacular valley views, walking and cycling right from the doorstep, and world-famous Derbyshire Dales attractions within reach. And after our makeover, we're cosier than ever.

The Hostel

Set in private wooded grounds and a good walk away from the nearest village, our Hostel of the Week is perfect for getting away from it all. This rural retreat is set in 60 acres of beautiful grounds and was originally built by a mill owner, perched over his empire to keep an eye on trade! YHA Ravenstor joined our network in the 1930s, making this impressive building one of our longest-running Youth Hostels ever. Look out for the Edwardian stained glass windows decorated with shields and some fabulous fireplaces - often filled with welcoming blazes to warm our guests. Our relaxed and homely atmosphere makes us a huge hit with families, and our quirky games room boasts a handpainted Space Invaders mural, table football and board games galore. If you're feeling peckish, we've got an ever-changing menu of delicious dishes to try, so pop in for our highly-praised fish and chips and some unbeatable views of the valley. The picnic benches outside are ideal for relaxing with a cheeky jug of Pimms, and we order in ales from the Wincle Brewery for our well-stocked bar. On September 6th YHA Ravenstor is taking part in our friendly Open Door Days event, so why not come and meet us for yourself?

Walking, Cycling & Climbing

Step outside to explore YHA Ravenstor's 60 acres of magnificent grounds, the Derbyshire Dales National Nature Reserve, and the glorious Peak District National Park. We know some superb wildlife walks straight from our doorstep, so take a hike down into the valley and follow the Monsal Trail along the River Wye. This famous traffic-free trail used to be a railway line and its path through the spectacular limestone dales can be tackled on foot, by bike and even on horseback! Why not spend the day rambling between Buxton and Bakewell, exploring the atmospheric disused train tunnels? Or walk across the historic viaduct at Monsal Head to see one of Derbyshire's most popular beauty spots, not to mention visit the marvellous pub nearby. If you're bringing your bike, check out our green cycle shelters made with wood sourced from sustainable forests and hang your clothes in our handy drying room. Adventurous climbers can take on the world-famous Ravenstor Crag, one of the most challenging in the Peak, or hang on to the fantastic limestone rocks of Water-cum-Jolly by the water's edge.

Peak District Attractions

From fascinating folk traditions to awesome show caves - the picturesque Derbyshire Dales are full of surprises. Poole's Cavern is just outside Buxton and offers two million years of history, vast limestone chambers and an excellent visitor centre packed with archeology. If you're feeling brave, Alton Towers makes an adrenaline-fuelled day out for the whole family and it's under an hour's drive away from us. History buffs can discover the period rooms and gorgeous grounds of Chatsworth House and Haddon Hall; don't miss their unique special events, guided tours and craft workshops. Derbyshire has some ancient folk traditions and we're right in the centre of many well dressing locations - a summer custom of decorating wells and springs with flower petals. There are some great pubs near YHA Ravenstor like the ivy-covered Angler's Rest in Millers Dale and the charming Red Lion in Litton; perfect bases for rambling between our National Nature Reserves. Fancy a slice of Derbyshire country shopping? The spiritual home of baking, Bakewell is known for its scrumptiously sweet Bakewell Pudding and has plenty of specialist shops for your outdoor needs.

Great for Kids

Bringing your whole family? No problem! YHA Ravenstor is incredibly family-friendly and rings with the sound of happy kids enjoying a break from their video games. Our private garden is fantastic for playing in and children can make lots of new friends during a stay here - just try to drag them away from our games room's foosball table. If you're planning a YHA School Trip here, we offer a range of exciting activities like archery, bushcraft and orienteering, along with engaging educational packages (we think geology rocks). Earlier this month we held a fun YHA Summer Camp for 10 to 14 year olds, helping them gain their John Muir Awards and try weaseling, caving and canoeing for the first time. So what are you waiting for? Book a stay and make some new friends at YHA Ravenstor!
