Hostel of the Week Archive: YHA Hartington Hall

YHA Hartington Hall is a treasure in itself - a Jacobean manor with an atmosphere to die for. It may be steeped in history, but this glorious building is bursting with things to do.

The hostel sits in the middle of three Peak District towns, hosts its own music and beer festival, and has cycling routes from the doorstep. Or if you're planning to tie the knot, we make a magnificent wedding venue for a great price.

The Hostel

Want to stay over in a real piece of English heritage? YHA Hartington Hall feels every bit as grand as a stately home - in fact we haven't changed that much since we opened in 1934. The hostel boasts lots of fascinating period features like stained glass, oak panelled rooms and eerie filled-in stone windows. You can forget the bright and bold decor of many city hostels; Hartington has a historical ambience that's matured over hundreds of years. Bonnie Prince Charlie may have stayed here during the Jacobite rising of 1745, and we recently welcomed 77 Bombay Street for a stay ahead of their Seven Mountains Tour. If you're bringing little ones, there’s a lot to entertain them like a pets corner, treasure hunt and adventure playground. We're even in the Guardian's “Top 10 UK Youth Hostels with Family Rooms”. Or if you like to party, our annual beer and music festival is not to be missed, plus we host Christmas packages to warm your cockles. With quirky touches like rooms named after types of cow and log-burners to keep you toasty, we love making guests feel right at home. Why not visit Eliza's Restaurant for one of our tasty meals?

Outdoor Activities

YHA Hartington Hall is an ideal hostel for cyclists, with everything you need for to explore the Peak District on two wheels. We've got a handy bicycle repair kit, a bike wash to keep your ride sparkling and lockable sheds for your peace of mind. Ask us about our famous "Flower Trails"; 5 circular cycling routes radiating out from our hostel with each forming one 'petal' of the flower. You can even cycle to the famous Monsal Trail - an unforgettable traffic-free journey along a disused railway line through the limestone dales. Or how about tackling the nearby Tissington Trail (don't miss the 350 long tunnel to Ashbourne), the Manifold Way through the woods or the much-loved High Peak Trail? If you fancy a family-friendly stroll, take a walk down to the nearby River Dove - you may spot a kingfisher if you're lucky. Want something a bit more thrilling? Adrenaline junkies can find Peak District Hang Gliding just 6 miles away for unforgettable views from the air. Or see the scenery and beauty spots from horseback from the Northfield Farm Riding and Trekking Centre. Carsington Reservoir is just 12 miles away too and offers exciting windsurfing courses.

Peak District Attractions

If you can tear yourself away from our pets, the hostel is well-connected to many Peak District attractions, with a bus running from Hartington village. YHA Hartington Hall lies in the middle of three great towns, so you can explore Matlock, Buxton and Ashbourne all in one stay. Matlock Bath is just a 20 minute drive away from us and it is home to the Heights of Abraham caves, family theme park Gulliver's Kingdom and some classic fish and chip shops. Buxton also has a large range of vibrant festivals and some jaw-dropping Victorian architecture, not to mention limestone legend and "The first wonder of the Peaks" Poole's Cavern. If you're an antiques buff, Ashbourne has an entire street of shops selling weird and wonderful treasures. Even Hartington itself is blessed with a fantastic cheese shop and the village creamery used to produce Dovedale cheese and Buxton blue. You'll also find Arbor Low close to us; the finest Stone Age 'henge' monument in the North of England. We're a perfect base for a trip to Alton Towers too, if you're feeling brave enough! Ask us about our fave days out in the area and you'll be amazed at how much the Peak District has to offer.

Weddings at Hartington Hall

YHA Hartington Hall makes a magical wedding venue for couples and we specialise in letting you tailor your perfect day. We've had many weddings since we started hosting them in 2000 and we've gained a great reputation. You can look forward to a lovely relaxed setting, plenty of photo opportunities in the hall and grounds, plus plenty of space to accommodate your guests. There's also our cosy honeymoon suite 'The Roost' - a self-contained nook to spend your first night as a married couple, with stunning views of the fields beyond. Whether you want stacks of local cheese as a wedding cake or a spot of karaoke, you're bound to find a competitive price for your big day. Give us a call and find out more.
