Hostel of the Week Archive: YHA Borrowdale

Where to start with YHA Borrowdale? This alpine-style legend is a favourite with Lake District adventurers and has a unique fun-loving atmosphere. Home to a great bar and staff who know the fells inside out, we've been welcoming hostellers since 1939. Whether you're tackling Scafell Pike or joining our outdoor activities, our riverside location is bound to inspire. Come play in the hills!

The Hostel

YHA Borrowdale was one of YHA's very first purpose-built hostels and our wooden building has a quirky ski chalet vibe. We've got big spaces to relax, the only year-round cafe in the area and one of the best bars in the network. It's appeared in CAMRA magazine and we offer craft beers and local ales - including two from Jennings Brewery up the road. Our restaurant also serves food from 6pm until late, filling hungry bellies with traditional pub grub like Cumberland sausage and mash or beef, beer and lentil casserole. The hostel attracts a real mix of people and you'll meet everyone from rosy-cheeked families to walkers, climbers and outdoor enthusiasts. Adventurers can feel right at home surrounded by fun decor made from hiking equipment, vintage rucksacks and even skis. Want to make some new friends? There are always exciting things going on here, from pumpkin carving in Halloween to midsummer bonfire parties. Kids can look out for our February half-term craft workshops too, and we've got circus skills and more coming up in summer. Or if you want a field day to remember, we're available for memorable school trips. And of course, don't forget to come and say hello to our mascot Borrowdale Bear!

Outdoor Activities

To say our hostel is mad about the outdoors is an understatement - we live and breathe the Lake District. YHA Borrowdale has its own "King of the Castle" fell race, so come and see if you can beat USA mountain runner JP Donovan's time. We're popular with running clubs and there are nearby events all year round. Our staff are often out on the fells too; manager Chris was in the local paper and chef Catherine won a prize in the Senior Guides Race. The team even braved the cold for a Christmas Day swim in the river and cycled through flooded (our hostel escaped luckily) roads. They have a huge sense of fun and you can follow their adventures on Facebook. If you love watersports then canoes and kayaks are available just a couple of miles away and the 'Black Moss Pot' swimming spot is incredible on a hot day. Castle Crag is our local treasure and you're guaranteed a breathtaking view whatever the weather. The crag is the only Wainwright Walk under 1,000 feet - perfect for a family-friendly day out - or you can tackle biggies like Scafell Pike and Great Gable from us. There's lots of traditional climbing too and Shepherd's Crag lies three miles away. Why not relax with a bacon butty after a day's climb?

Lakeland Attractions

It's hard to tear yourself away from our home-from-home, but there are plenty of attractions near us for an memorable day out. If you're staying at YHA Borrowdale, don't miss our hidden gem nearby; the Honister Slate Mine. England's last working slate mine is home to a spectacular underground environment and 11 tunnels. Don a hard hat and join one of the atmospheric tours; there are family-friendly flat routes, subterranean climbs and fascinating stories from the mine's history to discover. Or you can scale the heights with "The Lake District's biggest thrill" Via Ferrata - a chance to follow the miner's route to the top of the mountain while clipped to a wire. Or if you're hungry for Lake District living, Keswick is the North Lakes' most popular holiday destination and lies just seven miles away from us. Visit the bustling town for outdoorsy shops, pubs and cultural attractions, or visit Keswick's Theatre by the Lake for regular festivals and performances. You can even enjoy the scenery that inspired Coleridge's poetry with a relaxing boat trip on Derwentwater. Whether you fancy golf, wildlife watching or Go Ape, it can all be reached from YHA Borrowdale. Go ahead and ask us about our favourites.

Camping and Cabins

Want an amazing view of the moon and to be lulled to sleep by the sound of the river Derwent? YHA Borrowdale is an amazing place to go camping; surrounded by the Lakeland fells and our local wildlife. Pitch up near the riverbank and join some of our coolest visitors - we've had an old scout tent and a tipi so far. You can camp all year round (depending how brave you are) with access to our self-catering kitchen, bar, restaurant and a separate block of showers and toilets. If you fancy a few home comforts, we have three fantastic camping pods too. These are essentially wooden tents, complete with heating and a handy decking area. Bring a disposable BBQ and have a feast under the stars together. So what are you waiting for? Experience the beauty of the Lake District for less at YHA Borrowdale!
