Maps & Directions

Address

Herding Hill Farm, Shield Hill, Haltwhistle, Northumberland, NE49 9NW

How to get here

By car: Take the A69 to Haltwhistle. Look out for the brown Herding Hill Campsite tourist signs. As you leave the A69, you will find Shield Hill about 200 yards on your right.

By train: There is a train station in Haltwhistle which is on the South Tyne Valley line between Newcastle and Carlisle.

By public transport: The AD122 bus runs between Newcastle and Carlisle and stops right at the campsite gates. A range of fares and tickets are available and, when you buy a Hadrian’s Wall Country Bus ticket, all proceeds go directly to operate this invaluable AD122 bus service.

By caravan or motorhome: If you are towing a caravan, please do not follow Sat Nav systems as this may take you up Shield Hill from Haltwhistle which is extremely steep.

If you are travelling from the east on the A69, take the A68 north and then take the B6318 towards Chollerford. You will see our brown tourist signs at the Milecastle Inn which you should then follow.

If you are travelling from the west on the A69, take the Greenhead turn off and head along the B6318. You will see our brown tourist signs at the Milecastle Inn which you should then follow.

History

Up until just six years ago Herding Hill Farm was a working mixed sheep and beef family run farm specialising in rare breeds such as Shropshire lamb and Dexter beef. The building which houses the reception and bunkhouse used to be a farm shop and café and was built to resemble a traditional stone stable block and byre.
