Carless and carefree trips to YHA National Park properties

National Parks really are something special, aren’t they? They provide great breathing space, full of fresh air, open skies, running water and endless shades of green. Beautiful at any time of the year, but spring and summer bring an extra sense of magic as landscapes burst into life with wildflowers, birdsong and longer days to explore.  

At YHA, we’re lucky enough to have hostels located in or near National Parks across England and Wales. And crucially, many of them are easy to reach without a car. Travelling by public transport isn’t just more environmentally and budget-friendly, it’s all part of the adventure. Packing light, watching the scenery roll past and stepping straight into nature at the other end makes the journey just as memorable as the destination.

Here are some of our favourite car-free routes to YHA National Park hostels, perfect for relaxed, low-impact adventures.  

YHA South Downs

YHA South Downs sits in the heart of the rolling chalk hills of the (you guessed it!) South Downs National Park, an area that’s stunning to explore all year round. In spring, woodland floors fill with snowdrops and bluebells, lambs dot the fields frolicking and the trails open up under bright blue skies.  

The hostel is just a five-minute walk from Southease station in Sussex, with direct rail connections around 25 minutes from Brighton. It doesn’t get much easier than that.  

Set within spacious gardens and surrounded by excellent walking routes, the hostel is ideal for both gentle rambles and longer hikes. For something a little different, YHA South Downs also offers camping and glamping options, including premium bell tents with futon beds, soft furnishings and long burners, as well as Landpods raised off the ground for extra comfort, with retractable roofs so you can finish your day with a night under the stars.

YHA Castleton

Peak District by bus or train

A brilliant base for Peak District adventures, the village of Castleton is a favourite with walkers, climbers and cyclists alike. The nearby village of Hathersage is packed is packed with outdoor shops, cafés and pubs, hinting at the area’s long-standing reputation as an adventure hub.  

YHA Castleton Losehill Hall sits beneath the dramatic slopes of Mam Tor and the Great Ridge, with classic Peak District views in every direction. From the door, you can join springtime trails lined with daffodils, climb surrounding peaks for sweeping moorland views, or wander through limestone valleys dotted with gritstone outcrops.  

The hostel is just minutes from the famous Blue John caverns. You can also explore Peveril Castle or walk through the impressive limestone gorge of Cave Dale. Castleton is easily reached by bus or train from Sheffield or Manchester, stopping at the nearby villages of Hope and Hathersage on the Hope Valley Line, making this a genuinely car-free escape.  

YHA Manorbier

Pembrokeshire Coast by bus and train

The Pembrokeshire Coast National Park is a peaceful haven of rugged cliffs, sandy beaches and colourful seaside towns. As the days lengthen, wildflowers bloom along the coastal paths and seabirds fill the skies, perfect conditions for walking, wildlife spotting and slowing down as the weather gets milder.  

YHA Manorbier enjoys a spectacular clifftop position, with sweeping coastal views and direct access to miles of the Pembrokeshire Coast Path National Trail. Beautiful sandy beaches are just a short walk away.  

Travel is straightforward: reach Tenby by train, bus or coach, then take the 349 bus towards Withybush to Skrinkle Estate. From there, it’s a short walk to the brilliantly positioned hostel. Simple, scenic and completely car-free.  

YHA Ambleside

One of the UK’s first National Parks, the Lake District’s dramatic fells, shimmering lakes and deep valleys are just as captivating today. It’s also inspired generations of writers and storytellers, from Wordsworth’s daffodils to Beatrix Potter’s much-loved characters of Flopsy, Mopsy, Cotton-tail and Peter.  

YHA Ambleside is located less than 20 metres from the shore of Windermere, offering lake views that are hard to beat. Imagine waking up to sunlight dancing across the 10 miles of bright blue water before heading out to explore.  

The hostel is easily reached on the 555 bus from Kendal, a journey that’s famously scenic from the top deck. Kendal itself connects to Oxenholme on the West Coast Main Line, making Ambleside an excellent car-free option from cities across the UK.  

YHA Malham

YHA Malham is perfectly placed for exploring the delights of the Yorkshire Dales’ and its iconic landscapes. With dramatic limestone scenery, an abundance of flora and fauna and breathtaking views right on the doorstep, Malham has few rivals anywhere else in the UK.  

A short walk takes you to Janet’s Foss, a magical, crystal-clear waterfall and plunge pool steeped in folklore, said to be home of Janet, Queen of the Fairies. While Malham Cove, Gordale Scar and the surrounding countryside offer unforgettable walking routes. 

There are regular buses to Malham from Skipton, with services running year-round. Skipton is well connected by rail, with Leeds and Bradford both around 40 minutes away, making this a simple and rewarding car-free adventure.  

YHA Snowdon Pen-y-Pass

High in the Welsh hills, YHA Snowdon Pen-y-Pass is one of the most remote hostels in the YHA network, and one of the most rewarding for a rural retreat. Surrounded by mountains, lakes and wide-open landscapes, it’s an unforgettable base for explore Eryri National Park.  

Travel by train to Bangor, then connect by bus towards Pen-y-Pass. The journey takes around two hours in total and offers stunning views along the way. You can break it up with a stay at YHA Conwy, or head straight for the hills and begin your adventure on arrival.  

Its remote setting makes this hostel ideal for walkers, climbers and anyone looking to truly switch off all without needing a car.
