The Government has pledged £2.5 million to improve young people's access to the outdoors. This welcome news builds on the success of Generation Green, a Defra-funded project delivered by the YHA-led Access Unlimited coalition.
The Access Unlimited coalition comprises:
- YHA (England & Wales)
- Girlguiding
- Scouts
- Field Studies Council
- The Outward Bound Trust
- 10 National Parks in England
- National Landscapes (previously Association of AONBs)
The project has already provided 118,000 life-impacting opportunities for children, and the funding announcement will connect even more children with nature, especially those from under-represented groups.
YHA Chief Executive James Blake says: "This is very positive news and an important commitment by the Government, recognising that access to nature is key to young people."
The success of Generation Green has seen it recognised as an example of best practice in introducing children from under-represented groups to nature and the outdoors, and YHA now looks forward to exploring the relevant next steps with the Government and our partners.
"Set within the context of climate change," James adds, "it has never been more important that the next generations fall in love with nature and are given opportunities to visit it."
