YHA Brecon

Over the past five years YHA has invested £19.5 million in its network of Youth Hostels in England and Wales, creating great value, modern and comfortable accommodation, including en-suite facilities at hostels around the country like Castleton in Derbyshire, Beverley in East Yorkshire, and some of our best loved smaller hostels like Poppit Sands, Cardigan, and Rowen, Conwy.

YHA wants to ensure a sustainable future, to continue to develop a network which can be invested in confidently and which is able to meet and advance its charitable objectives. Throughout its history YHA has opened and closed Youth Hostels.

Over the last year YHA has been looking very carefully at the investment needed at YHA Brecon.

In recent years we have not been able to improve the financial performance of the hostel and we believe that it is in YHA’s best interest to dispose of YHA Brecon as a whole.

The hostel was chosen very reluctantly because when we looked at the amounts we would need to invest to undertake all repairs and meet customer needs, even allowing for significant increases in the numbers of people staying and cost savings, the site would still make a significant loss.

We remain committed to staying in the Brecon Beacons and we will continue our discussions with the Brecon Beacons National Park Authority about potential new hostels in the area.

Closing a Youth Hostel is never easy and YHA does understand the impact this decision has for guests and members who enjoy close links and strong loyalties with the hostel.

The decision has been discussed with staff concerned and YHA will make every effort to ensure that they are able to continue working with YHA elsewhere. The Youth Hostel will remain open until it is sold.

By closing and selling hostels, YHA can release the capital value of sites like this to pay for investments elsewhere at hostels which do make a return, and also to reduce the amount of money we need to borrow from the banks.
