Spotlight on YHA Hawkshead

Spotlight on YHA Hawkshead

Want to add colour to your Lake District break? YHA Hawkshead has our biggest choice of camping and cabins in Cumbria - great news for glampers. This peaceful Regency-style hostel overlooks Esthwaite Water and is perfect for relaxing family breaks. We've got our own bike hire scheme, sit in the heart of Beatrix Potter country and have fab access to Grizedale Forest's epic mountain biking trails.

The Hostel

If you haven't stayed at YHA Hawkshead recently, you might not recognise it. New life has been breathed into our hostel, after volunteer parties gave this tranquil location the TLC it deserved. Our Grade II listed building features distinctive yellow and blue decor, plus many unique touches to make Regency fans smile. Just look up to admire the murals of grapes and vines, or our sparkling new chandeliers. One of the quieter Lakeland hostels, you'll find breathtaking views from our dorms and a great range of food and drink on offer. You can enjoy a delicious range of home-cooked dishes, or treat yourself to one of our bestselling local beers - we recommend a bottle from Jennings Brewery. We're also a fantastic hostel for families and can give expert advice on all the fun Lake District activities nearby. There's even a mysterious grave stone in our cellar; we're not sure what or who it could be! From hand-painted murals in the games room to a welcome selection of outdoor magazines, there's never been a better time to visit our spruced up home-from-home.

Lakeland Attractions

Peter Rabbit, Tom Kitten and Jemima Puddle-Duck are all within reach of YHA Hawkshead - we're in true Beatrix Potter territory. Her home at Hill Top Farm is only a two mile walk away and gives a beautifully-preserved insight into how the author lived. Our local village of Hawkshead is even nearer, boasting a gallery of Beatrix's original works and a range of cute cafes, shops and pubs. And if you still can't get enough of her animal magic, catch the ferry to the Beatrix Potter Attraction in Bowness-on-Windermere for a top family day out. It's only four miles to Windermere from our hostel, so how about getting a Freedom of the Lake ticket for an easy way to explore the area? The Lakes Aquarium is at the Lakeside stop; a spectacular attraction with an underwater tunnel of freshwater wildlife and dabbling ducks. You could even hop off at bustling Ambleside to get your fix of Lakeland shopping and fine dining. Or, if you're heading west, don't miss a day on Lake Coniston - home to the tragic Bluebell accident and John Ruskin's Brantwood home.

Outdoor Activities

Live your life on two wheels? With our new bike hire scheme and amazing access to Grizedale Forest, YHA Hawkshead could have been made for cyclists. If you want to leave your bike at home, no problem! We've got e-bikes for novices, kiddy bikes for little ones, mountain bikes for adventurers and everything in between. Grizedale Forest is the real jewel in our crown and sits just a couple of miles up the road from us. It boasts some of the best mountain biking routes in the country, along with some fabulous walking routes for ramblers too. Look out for nearby sporting events like the Lakeland Trails and our local walking festival - or ask us at reception about what's happening this season. There's a massive Go Ape within walking distance too, so families can get in touch with their inner monkey. Will you choose swinging through the trees, powering through the forest on a Segway, or flying down a zip wire? With our next-door Esthwaite Water ideal for fishing, watersports at Coniston and Windermere, plus Geocaching in our own grounds - you're spoilt for choice.

Camping and Cabins

For a Lake District stay with a difference, try one of our quirky Camping and Cabins options. YHA Hawkshead gives you four ways to sleep under the stars, with eight camping pods, two festival-inspired tipis, a spacious octagonal cabin and traditional camping on offer. We even do a handy takeaway service from our restaurant, so you can enjoy fish and chips in the privacy of your pod. From bohemian decor to flaming fire pits, a stay in our atmospheric camping village is bound to leave you feeling at one with nature. You can even buy firewood from our hostel to kick start your own party in the Lake District National Park. So what are you waiting for? Experience the beauty of the Lake District for less at YHA Hawkshead!
