Hostel of the Week Archive: YHA Beer

Hostel of the Week Archive: YHA Beer

If you've never visited the Jurassic Coast, it's time to see why geology rocks. YHA Beer is an idyllic base for a Devon holiday and sits on the edge of a fishing village, just minutes from the beach. With our Arts and Crafts hostel and gorgeous garden, we're a home for fossil hunters and walkers exploring the South West Coast Path. Discover our Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and World Heritage Site.

The Hostel

Light, airy and with a spectacular view of the countryside, YHA Beer lets you relax the minute you walk through the door. Our Arts and Crafts country house has heaps of character - it's as beautiful and unique as the Jurassic Coast itself. Look out for original features of the Arts and Crafts movement, gorgeous window seats and a TV lounge as comfortable as your own home. You can soak up the Devonshire sunshine on our lawn too and bask in the beauty of nature. How about booking a camping pitch in our grounds or one of our festival-inspired bell tents for some glamping? We've even got our own BBQ equipment if you fancy grilling a fresh catch from the fishermen on the beach. Our hostel is perfect for tranquil seaside holidays and the hostel feels like one big happy family. If you're looking to join a guided fossil walk or need help choosing which nearby pub to visit, just ask. Guests can also join our Supper Club to make some new friends, or sample some of our local beer and cider. Whether you're young or old, YHA Beer will have you winding down in no time.

Outdoor Activities

The Jurassic Coast is packed with amazing sights and Beer's famous flinty chalk cliffs are just minutes away. You'll find outstanding scenery around every corner at this World Heritage Site and we're in the East Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty too. If you've come to find fossils, award-winning local author Nigel J. Clarke runs guided fossil hunting walks from Lyme Regis and Charmouth nearby. The area around YHA Beer can be described as "coast meets countryside", so you get the best of both worlds; rolling hills and picturesque beaches. Bring your swimming gear for a dip in the cove nearby, or hire a little fishing boat for a relaxing day on the waves. You can even drive to the Teign Diving Centre in Teignmouth and learn to explore the reefs of Lyme Bay with friendly instructors. Our crowning glory is the breathtaking South West Coast Path - an epic 630 miles and the UK's longest National Trail. Spend a day (or a whole week) discovering this incredible coastline and take a look at the rock pools, caves and remarkable geology of this natural wonder.

Devon Attractions

One of England's prettiest counties, Devon is loved for its eye-candy coastlines and glorious sunshine. If you love natural wonders, nautical legends and (of course) fab pubs, YHA Beer is a dream come true. Beer itself is a picture postcard village with a thriving fishing culture and a past of smugglers and pirates. Its fleet of colourful boats offers fresh seafood and our annual summer regatta has lots of fun things to do. Whether you're after sea shanties or late night dances, this "little piece of heaven" is sure to become a family favourite. The nearby Lyme Regis Fossil Festival brings dinosaur enthusiasts together every spring and Sidmouth Folk Week attracts tens of thousands of music lovers. Beer has some unique attractions too, such as the Beer Quarry Caves - a vast man-made complex of underground caverns with over 2000 years of stories. The Beer Heights Light Railway and Devon's Crealy Adventure Park are marvellous for kids too. And Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall's River Cottage is 5 miles away, if you fancy learning how to cook the South West way.

School Trips

Just minutes from the village and with space to accommodate over 30 students, YHA Beer makes the ultimate base for a Jurassic Coast school trip. There's a bus stop nearby for exploring Devon's attractions and a cosy lounge for winding down in. Spend a few days exploring this UNESCO World Heritage Site and see kids inspired by the area's fantastic natural history. Geology and geography are brought to life with our packages and there are lots of fun and engaging activities to try. They could be solving prehistoric crimes with "CSI Jurassic Coast", debating about how to preserve the coastline, or collecting rock samples. So what are you waiting for? Join the family and discover why so many adventurers set their compass for YHA Beer.
