For the foreseeable future, the following changes will be in operation at YHA Newcastle Central. We are sorry for inconvenience this has caused, we're working hard to safely open all areas of our hostels as soon as we can.

  1. This hostel offers private rooms with en-suite or shared toilets and showers facilities with extra Covid-secure cleaning regimes.

  3. Dining room(s) are open to guests for the consumption of their own food.


  1. We will be serving a limited food and drinks menu for guests to take away.

  2. Indoor seating for dining is now open at this hostel in line with Government social distancing rules. All tables and chairs are fully cleaned after use.

The hostel

YHA Newcastle Central offers dorm rooms and private en-suite rooms as well as suites if you want to upgrade your stay in the city. The Carliol Square Café serves drinks, snacks, and meals for guests to enjoy. There is a bean bag lounge area where guests can wind down after a day of exploring this vibrant city.

Premium suites

Our premium suites have two separate bathrooms as well as a separate lounge area with large screen Smart TV and sleep up to 14 people - perfect for a night away with your friends.

Get ready for a busy day exploring the city of Newcastle with our delicious continental breakfast. Your breakfast includes croissant, fruit, your choice of yogurt, a choice of cereals, fruit juice and Fairtrade tea of coffee. Breakfast is served from 7.30am - 9.30am on weekdays and 7.30am - 11am on weekends and you can get up to 15% off breakfast as part of your online booking.

Vegetarian and vegan options are available.

Newcastle Gaol was built as a gaol and house of correction, designed by the famous Newcastle architect John Dobson on the site of YHA Newcastle Central. In 1925 the prison closed with the prisoners transferred to Durham. 

Telephone House, the city's telephone exchange, was built in its place in 1932, which later became YHA Newcastle Central.
