Winter city breaks across the UK 2025

Liverpool Albert Dock during winter

‘Tis the season to be jolly! Winter is the perfect time to get to know a city that little bit better. From free museums and ice skating to shopping and so much more, there’s plenty of things to see and do this season while enjoying a city getaway with loved ones. There might even be a glass of mulled wine (or two!) on offer to keep you warm. After all, it’s the season to eat, drink and be merry!

There’ll likely be a Christmas market in each of these cities. Check out our Winter Wonderland blog for more festive inspiration. But if you’re looking for other winter activities, we’ve put together our top picks for a magical city break across the UK. And the best part? There’s a YHA hostel in each of these destinations, perfect for an affordable winter escape...

London

It’s all happening in London this winter and that’s why it always makes for a fun-filled city break. Book a stay at YHA London Central and be right in the middle of it all! With an incredible range of both traditional and alternative things to do, you can enjoy everything from ice discos at Alexandra Palace to spooky experiences in the London Dungeon. Explore Oxford Street, the ultimate Christmas shopping location, and make sure you tick off every item on your festive shopping list. Hop on the London Eye for panoramic views of the wintry capital city or reserve an igloo at Coppa Club, just around the corner from the Tower of London, for a truly unique dining experience.

Bristol

An oh-so vibrant and quirky city, Bristol oozes festive charm during the winter months and YHA Bristol is perfectly in tune with its creative vibe. Put one foot in front of the other on a Banksy walking tour or lace up your boots for a winter stroll through Ashton Court Estate (only a stone’s throw from the city centre) and say hello to the resident deer. Visit the bohemian neighbourhood of Stokes Croft, then wander along nearby Gloucester Road, which is the longest row of independent shops in Europe. If the weather takes a turn, head to M Shed and enjoy free exhibitions about the culture and people of Bristol.

Cambridge

One of our most stylish hostels, YHA Cambridge is ideally located for exploring this historic university city this winter. Between 28th November and 23rd December, the Cambridge University Botanic Garden hosts an enchanting light trail celebrating the world of plants. Take an exciting punting tour along the River Cam hot chocolate in hand or step inside the University Museum of Zoology for free and marvel at thousands of fascinating specimens across the animal kingdom. If you fancy exploring on foot, try a Dinky Door walking tour, spotting miniature, hidden sculptures across the city. And for a truly festive and heartwarming experience, listen to Choral Evensong in King’s College Chapel. It’s completely free and held in one of the most breathtaking Gothic buildings in the UK.

Manchester

From concerts in the cathedral to huge family-friendly events, this city is often described as the ‘capital of the north’. Just around the corner from YHA Manchester in Castlefield, visit the Science and Industry Museum for free and discover 250 years of innovation. Catch a thrilling football match at either Manchester City’s Etihad Stadium or Manchester United’s Old Trafford, and warm up with a classic northern pie in the concourse. Skate Manchester returns from 25th October 2025 to 4th January 2026, transforming Cathedral Gardens into a covered ice rink with themed nights and live music. Afterwards, hit the shops at the Arndale and Exchange Square, or head further afield to the Trafford Centre for a full day of retail therapy.

Liverpool

Visiting Liverpool in winter is a magical experience, as the city transforms into a festive winter wonderland beside the River Mersey. The iconic waterfront sparkles under twinkling lights, with fascinating museums to explore, such as the Museum of Liverpool, Maritime Museum or The Beatles Story Museum, where you can learn about the legendary ‘fab four’. Stay at YHA Liverpool Albert Dock, close to the historic docklands, where cosy cafés invite you in for a warm drink and mince pie. Don’t miss The Light Before Christmas at Liverpool Cathedral, an unforgettable experience featuring stunning light projections and immersive soundscapes. Round off your trip with a Mersey River Cruise to see the city from a unique perspective on the water. With its blend of culture, history and festive cheer, Liverpool in winter is a delightful destination for all.
