Family activities

Family Multi-Activity

The return of our popular action-packed holiday featuring adventurous yet accessible outdoor activities that appeal to children and adults alike.

Our position in the heart of the Peak District National Park means climbing, abseiling, caving, canoeing, weaselling, archery, orienteering, bushcraft and high/low ropes courses are available every morning, afternoon and evening. Children (from 8 years old) and adults alike invariably rise to the challenge.

This is an all-inclusive package including full-board accommodation in family rooms for four nights (Monday to Thursday). Minibus transfers are available for those arriving by train.

Price: £290 per adult, £245 for under 16s

Family Multi-Activity Weekend

Our popular action-packed holiday has been transformed into a weekend package.

You'll enjoy adventurous yet accessible outdoor activities that appeal to children (from 8 years old) and adults alike.

This is an all-inclusive package including a full programme of activities, plus full-board accommodation for the weekend.

Price: £140 per adult, £120 for under 18s

Multi-Activity Weekend

The successful weekend format for those aged 18+.

This a chance to sample as many challenging, yet accessible, activities as possible utilising every morning, afternoon and evening. No particular ability or experience required, just enthusiasm!

This is an all-inclusive package including a full programme of outdoor activities, plus full-board accommodation for the weekend.

Price: £165 per person (adults only)

School Holiday Activities

A series of one-off family friendly activities are scheduled every day of the Easter and half-term holidays for those that wish to try our accessible adventures.

These half-day experiences are available to anyone staying at any Peak District youth hostel, though children (from age 8) must be accompanied by an adult.

Choose to go climbing, abseiling, canoeing, raft building, caving, weaselling, orienteering, archery, high ropes course, hill-walking and much more.

Price: £20 per adult, £14 per child

Navigation training qualifications

We offer a range of navigation, training and qualification courses at YHA Edale.

National Navigation Award

These courses will allow you to develop key skills in accordance with the National Navigation Award Scheme (NNAS) syllabus.

Bronze Award

A weekend in the heart of the Peak District learning basic navigation skills in accordance with the NNAS syllabus.

This certificated award will be presented to successful candidates after training and continuous assessment throughout the course. Qualified, skilled instructors and appropriate terrain on our doorstep make this course as accessible as possible to all candidates.

This package includes all tuition, plus full-board accommodation for the weekend.

Silver Award

A full weekend of training and continuous assessment in accordance with the syllabus, in the heart of the Dark Peak.

Qualified and experienced instructors will provide input in detailed map work and basic compass technique on appropriate terrain to give maximum encouragement to candidates. Those who are successful will receive this recognised and certificated award plus the skills and confidence to start venturing off the beaten track.

This package includes all course input, plus full-board accommodation for the weekend.

Gold Award Training

A full weekend in the challenging terrain of the Dark Peak uplands such as Kinder Scout and Bleaklow.

This course provides training in accordance with the syllabus for the most demanding conditions of featureless terrain and poor visibility. While this offers training only, our qualified and experienced instructors will ensure the greatest familiarity with all aspects of the syllabus in appropriate conditions to adequately prepare candidates for subsequent assessment.

This package includes all course input, plus full-board accommodation for the weekend.

Gold Award Assessment

The moors of the Dark Peak are the ideal terrain to test suitable candidates for this certified and nationally recognised award at its highest level.

Candidates must have completed Gold Award Training. This package includes full-board accommodation for the weekend.

Mountain Training

These courses allow you to develop key skills in accordance with the Mountain Training awarding body network.

Hill and Moorland Leader Training

The Hill and Moorland Leader award is a nationally recognised qualification for those intending to lead groups away from the paths in upland terrain.

The Dark Peak is the very epitome of this terrain and we use Kinder Scout – our back garden – as the ideal training ground. All aspects of the syllabus are covered in a largely practical way by experienced and qualified staff to prepare candidates as thoroughly and realistically as possible on this three-day course.

This package includes all course input and full-board accommodation for three nights.

Hill and Moorland Leader Assessment

Ideal terrain on our doorstep enables us to cover all aspects of the syllabus with the greatest efficiency and convenience on this intensive three-day course.

Candidates must have attended Hill and Moorland Leader Training. This package includes all course input and full-board accommodation for three nights.

Rock Climbing Instructor Training

This is the nationally recognised award for those intending to lead groups in climbing activities.

The training course comprises two days on the crags of the Peak District and one at an indoor climbing wall. It covers, in a realistic and practical way, all aspects of the syllabus to prepare candidates for assessment.

This package includes all tuition and full-board accommodation. A non-residential option is also available.

Rock Climbing Instructor Assessment

Two full days at the crag and an evening at the climbing wall covering all aspects of the syllabus.

Land activities

White Peak Walker

The many limestone dales of the Peak District provide less physically demanding, but no less interesting, terrain to explore in the company of a knowledgeable and experienced instructor.

Many sites such as Cheedale and Lathkill Dale are local or national nature reserves, hinting at the wildlife and scenery to be discovered. The terrain underfoot is occasionally rocky or muddy but easy-going riverside meanders are a more likely scenario for relaxed exercise in a striking environment in the company of other like-minded participants.

This is an all-inclusive package including full-board accommodation for the weekend.

Edale Skyline

A legendary itinerary covering Lose Hill, Back Tor, Mam Tor and the whole of the southern edge of the Kinder Scout plateau to complete a classic round trip.

Two full days in the company of our knowledgeable and qualified instructors who will help to ensure success by navigating and pacing accordingly. We'll also ease the strain with local knowledge and minibus transport from/to the restart point – it will never be more accessible than this!

Dark Peak Walker

The moors of the Dark Peak are on our doorstep.  With typically more challenging terrain and demanding navigation, this is an ideal opportunity for an experienced and knowledgeable instructor to lead the way.

Kinder Scout and Bleaklow are typical areas to be explored, both steeped in history and incident, typical of this unique environment. Open access land allows the freedom to roam off the path.

Introductory Caving

A weekend of subterranean exploration, suitable for complete novices, discovering the unique underground world of Derbyshire’s famous caves and mines.

In the company of qualified and knowledgeable instructors and with all specialist equipment provided. You only need moderate fitness and flexibility, and an adventurous streak to venture into the depths of this memorable environment.

This is an all-inclusive package including two full days of cave/mine exploration and full-board accommodation.

Introductory Climbing

The gritstone ‘edges’ of the Peak have long been a favoured climbers playground for novice or expert alike.

Hundreds of routes at numerous locations enable an accessible and thorough introduction with plentiful ‘hands on’ climbing time. You'll also benefit from a comprehensive overview of all relevant technical skills and knowledge, all delivered by qualified and enthusiastic instructors.

This is an all-inclusive package including full-board accommodation.

Water activities

Tackle the open water with our boat-based activities.

Introductory Open Canoe

Suitable for complete novices, this course maximises time on the water and concentrates on the basic paddling technique and all aspects of water safety.

All specialist equipment is provided and instruction is given by suitably qualified and experienced British Canoe Union coaches. Different venues and a journeying element add interest and depth to this thorough introduction to the sport.
