Family/Novice Cycling Holidays in England and Wales

One of best ways to bring the entire family back to nature and enjoy the scenery of our amazing landscape is on two wheels. Flat cycle tracks and quiet traffic-free zones really set these family-friendly hostels apart from the rest, offering a relaxing but active holiday for cyclists of all abilities and ages. Breathe in the fresh air as you glide over.

Forgotten to pack your bike? Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered, as we can organise bike hire for you via our local partners – perfect if you don’t fancy bringing the roof rack. The staff in our hostels will also be happy to help you get on your bike by recommending cycle routes that are suitable no matter what level you are.

Nothing beats a lazy Sunday bike ride with the family. Here are our top tips for staying safe and having a brilliant time:

- Always cycle behind your children when on a road. Ideally, have an adult in front as well.
- Check your child’s bike is roadworthy before you set off, and periodically make sure it’s still the right size for them. Cycling stores can help you with getting the fit right.
- A helmet is essential safety gear. The helmet should be snug but not too tight, and should sit low on the forehead, just above the eyebrow. The ‘Y’ of the side straps should meet just below the ear, and the chin strap should be tight enough that you can fit no more than one finger underneath it.
- Always follow the Highway Code and make sure your children are aware of it.

The ride:
- Be sure to have a good stash of drinks and healthy snacks handy, and ideally make sure each child has their own water bottle fitted to their bike for easy access.
- Get to know your route; check beforehand for any steep areas and plan in rest breaks.
- Always carry a first aid kit and a bike tool kit in case there’s a flat tyre!
- Be aware of how your child is doing; if they’re getting agitated or are starting to lag, have a little break to recover.
- Layers are your friend. We all know how quickly the weather can turn, so be prepared with a shower proof jacket and a jumper.
- Praise your child’s riding and stay enthusiastic to keep them going on the tough bits!
- End the route somewhere you can get a treat; an ice cream goes a long way towards helping recovery!
