Please support the YHA Tintagel Appeal

YHA Tintagel may have some of the most stunning views in our network, but this well-loved hidden gem needs your help. We’re planning to safeguard this small, beautifully-located hostel for future generations with a sympathetic renovation in 2016.

This traditional hostel still receives many delighted reviews from guests, but we’re aware that the weather-beaten building and tired facilities need bringing up to date. In fact, our last renovation was back in the 1970s! We’re planning to keep YHA Tintagel’s legend alive with a sensitive upgrade to the décor, furniture and layout – but don’t worry, it won’t lose any of its unique magic.

We are planning to:

• Replace old windows and doors and add a new kitchen, dining and lounge area

• Install a new heating system, complete with cosy woodburning stove

• Redecorate rooms throughout and install new toilets and showers

• Reconfigure the social space to improve the cramped layout

• Add sustainable features like weather-proofing and eco-friendly lighting

• Replace beds, furniture and curtains and add individual bed lights

After its transformation, YHA Tintagel will be able to stay open all year round and there’ll be Exclusive Hire availability too. In short, we want this special hostel to be a legend again.

Just a 10 minute walk from Tintagel Castle and with the Atlantic crashing below, YHA Tintagel is the Holy Grail of Cornish hostels and our project is well worth your support. The final outcome will be greater energy efficiency for the hostel, a better layout to make the most of the amazing sea views, and an upgrade from Visit England 2-star to 3-star standard.

How you can help

As well as relying on the Small Hostels Fund, the generosity of members, guests and supporters plays a huge part in our fundraising. Why visit Tintagel

Tintagel is one of Britain’s most popular places to visit and the romantic Arthurian legends come to life here. Immerse yourself in the myth of Merlin’s Cave and visit 13th century English Heritage site Tintagel Castle; the supposed birthplace of King Arthur. Tintagel town is also an attraction in itself, with fascinating historic buildings, shops and plenty of things to see.

The area around our hostel has its own story too. YHA Tintagel was the office and master’s house of Long Grass quarry – the last working quarry on the Tintagel coast. You can still see the slate waste scree on the cliff face below the hostel if you dare to look down! During World War II it’s thought our hostel served as wartime accommodation for an Atlantic radar station, the remains of which can still be found in our surrounding grounds. After opening as a hostel in 1947, why not help decide the next chapter of YHA Tintagel’s history by donating to our appeal?
