On the climb: Great BMC events for 2013

If you have tried indoor climbing but are unsure how to make the switch from climbing walls to natural rock faces, the British Mountaineering Council (BMC) has ways to help. The group has a range of events planned for 2013 that will improve your skills and increase you confidence to go it alone in the Great Outdoors.

The BMC Climbing Movement Masterclasses will be touring England and Wales throughout April, with tuition from expert climber Naomi Buys. The techniques she will be focusing on are some of those which often catch climbers out when they try to make the switch from indoor walls, with their convenient hand-holds and planned routes, to the open rock faces: footwork precision, economy of movement and the utilisation of existing strengths. Classes take place in North Wales, Swansea, Plymouth, London, Milton Keynes, Durham and Manchester, with more details available at the BMC website.

The BMC has also teamed up with the national outdoor centre Plas y Brenin with courses specifically to help young climbers make the change from indoor to outdoor. Based in Snowdonia National Park, Plas y Brenin provides access to some of the best climbing crags in Britain, with top-notch tuition from local experts. The BMC explains: "The new Ready to Rock course is a bespoke, affordable, course aiming to give people the confidence and skills they need to begin climbing outdoors. No outdoor climbing experience, or specialist climbing equipment, is necessary."

Dates have been set at various intervals through April, May and June, giving climbers aged 18-25 plenty of opportunities to take their skills to the next level.

The BMC has not forgotten about more experienced climbers however, and is encouraging them to try something new too, with a trip to Pembrokeshire to try sea-cliff climbing. A campaign by the BMC has been successful, and now access to the cliffs is available to climbers all year round.

If you want to take part in any of these BMC events, you'll find that there is a YHA hostel nearby to provide with great-value accommodation so you can really make a break of it.
