Beautifully located and with a cosy, informal feel, YHA Coniston Coppermines offers a 500ft head start on the ascent of the Old Man of Coniston. If you’re up for the challenge, scale the Old Man to enjoy incredible views from the summit.
The hostel provides a great base for outdoor activity breaks and walking holidays, with splendid walks and views to enjoy. There's culture here too with the National Trust's steam-powered Victorian yacht touring Coniston Water, Brantwood - historic home of artist John Ruskin, plus sculpture trails in Grizedale Forest.
This hostel is available on an Exclusive Hire basis only, so you'll get the entire place to yourself.
Walking groups and field trip students will love staying at YHA Coniston Coppermines. This rural retreat sits between Coniston Water and the Old Man of Coniston. Culture fans can be close to Brantwood and the National Trust’s steam-powered yacht too.
Whether you’re on a geography field trip, hiking in the hills or exploring Grizedale Forest, there’s a lot to see nearby. Why not scramble at the famous Pudding Stone climbing spot? You’ll feel on top of the world at this secluded Lakeland location.
Most of our bedrooms are dormitory style rooms with bunk beds. We always try to allocate bedrooms close together and will never ask your group to share bedrooms with anyone not in your group.
Upgrades are available for sole use of an area, floor or the entire place.
The hostel is 500ft up the Old Man of Coniston himself, with a cosy lounge to relax in and a woodburning stove to make things extra cosy. The walls are covered with inspiring knowledge of the Lake District and groups can huddle around the roaring fire. Or why not bond with board games and great conversation?
With tasty breakfasts, packed lunches and evening meals, groups are sure to find something delicious to eat at YHA Coniston Coppermines (see sample menu).

Manager recommends: Planning a climbing holiday to scale the slopes of the Old Man of Coniston? Give yourself a head start by staying at Coniston Coppermines. Almost halfway up a mountain with a view to match, this rural retreat is surrounded by fells, allowing hillwalkers easy access onto Wetherlam and the Old Man of Coniston itself.
