Heaton Park, just north of the city centre of Manchester, is the largest park in the northwest. It’s free to visit and is full of attractions and things to do, making it perfect for a fun day out in Manchester with all the family.

Children will love exploring the play areas and making some furry friends in the Animal Centre while adults can enjoy some peaceful walks in nature, just a stone’s throw from the hustle and bustle of the city.

Is Heaton Park the biggest park in the UK?

Heaton Park covers around 263 hectares and is the largest park in Greater Manchester, as well as being the biggest in England. It is also the largest municipal park in Europe.

But it’s not just its size that’s impressive. It has been named one of the best parks in the UK by the experts at idealo. The results were ranked on key metrics, including monthly searches and the number of social media posts, and Heaton Park came sixth. It was also one of just two parks outside of London to make it into the top six.

How long does it take to walk around Heaton Park?

A circular route around the perimeter of Heaton Park is around 2.8 miles (4.5 kilometres) and should take about an hour and a half, depending on your walking speed and fitness level.

However, we recommend spending a full day at Heaton Park as there is so much to do there.

What is there to do in Heaton Park?

You are spoilt for choice when it comes to things to do in Heaton Park. From indulging in a yummy picnic on a summer’s day to running wild in the park’s open spaces, you’ll find plenty of free-range fun here.

Is Heaton Park free to visit?

Yes, Heaton Park is free to visit. There may be an additional charge for some of the activities at the park, such as hiring a boat. Some of the special events and music concerts hosted here have an entrance fee.

Things to do at Heaton Park

Heaton Park Animal Centre

Heaton Park Animal Centre is home to animals such as chickens, goats, pigs, guinea pigs, rabbits, and alpacas. Entry is free and it’s open all year round apart from Christmas Day.

Heaton Park Garden Centre

Heaton Park Garden Centre is a traditional garden centre selling a range of homegrown plants. The historical gardens here were planted over 100 years ago and are the perfect place to relax.

Boating lake

The boating lake at Heaton Park is very picturesque, and you can enjoy a stroll around its tranquil waters or sit on the shoreline and read a book with a beautiful view in the background.

If you’d prefer to get out on the water, there are a variety of boats available to hire, including rowing boats, electric boats, and pedalos.

Play areas

If you’re travelling with children, then a visit to the two play areas at Heaton Park is a must. The Lakeside Adventure playground is a large wooden play area with swings, slides, in-ground trampolines, tree houses, and a wobbly bridge. There’s also an area for kids to get creative and build their own dens.

Bowling greens

There are two flat greens and two crown greens for bowling that are open during the summer season. There is a charge to play and hire bowls.

Golf course

There’s a picturesque golf course in the park with spectacular views over the city of Manchester and the Pennines. There is a charge to play golf here.

Bring a picnic

There are no end of spots in Heaton Park which are perfect for pitching up with a picnic. Make use of the self-catering facilities at YHA Manchester to prepare some sandwiches and snacks for dining al fresco.

Events at Heaton Park

Many special events and music concerts take place at Heaton Park.

Live music events

Some of the world’s biggest musical acts have performed at Heaton Park. Manchester’s biggest music festival, Parklife, takes place here each year. Heaton Park was also famously the venue for some of the Oasis reunion gigs in summer 2025.

Heaton Park parkrun

The free 5km parkrun takes place at Heaton Park every Saturday at 9am. The course is mainly tarmac paths, and there’s a small gravel section around the lake. It’s a fun and friendly race that the whole family can take part in.

How to get to Heaton Park from YHA Manchester

Heaton Park is approximately 4.6 miles (7.4 kilometres) from YHA Manchester.

By car: It takes around 17 minutes to drive from the Youth Hostel to Heaton Park. There is a pay and display car park here.

By public transport: You can take the tram from YHA Manchester to Heaton Park. Walk approximately ten minutes to the tram stop at Deansgate, then catch the Green line to Bury. Alight at Heaton Park. The entire journey should take just over 40 minutes.
