YHA Grinton Lodge investment set to boost local economy

A £647,000 investment in a popular North Yorkshire Youth Hostel has created jobs and boosted the local economy.

YHA Grinton Lodge in Richmond has now re-opened its doors after a four-month project to develop the Youth Hostel, expand capacity and improve educational and camping facilities. Following the development it is expected that visitor numbers to the hostel near Reeth will increase from 10,000 to 16,000 users a year

With financial support from DEFRA, in the form of a £114,881 grant, and a further £532,000 spent on the hostel’s development by YHA, the former shooting lodge, located on the southern slopes of Swaledale, has been able to develop a disused wing and the grounds of Grinton Lodge.

The Youth Hostel now boasts additional bedrooms, en-suite accommodation, games room, classrooms and an indoor activity area. Outside, the Lodge’s courtyard is to become an area for activities, plus toilet and showering facilities have been upgraded for the popular ‘Glamping’ pods in the grounds.

Prior to the development, YHA Grinton Lodge had 69 beds in 14 rooms; it now has 80 beds in 20 rooms, five of which have en-suite facilities. The increase in facilities and accommodation has also led to the creation of two new jobs at the Youth Hostel.

YHA Grinton Lodge Hostel Manager Ian Roe commented: “Grinton Lodge is a hugely popular Youth Hostel and world-renowned for its location, architecture and facilities. Frequently demand for accommodation outstripped supply. Thanks to the financial support of DEFRA, we have been able to fully realise the potential of Grinton Lodge and create a Youth Hostel and facilities that are world class.”

Minister for Rural Affairs, Richard Benyon said: “The transformation of Grinton Lodge will not only bring more people to the Lodge, but it will have a positive knock-on effect on the local economy, bringing more tourists to the area and providing rural businesses with new opportunities.

“All too often in rural areas, wonderfully historic buildings are allowed to fall into disrepair. We are investing hundreds of thousands of pounds in projects like this to allow charities, communities and businesses across the country to turn them to good use.”

YHA Chief Executive Caroline White added: “YHA’s capital investment programme is steadily creating a world class network of Youth Hostels, throughout England and Wales. YHA Grinton Lodge is a brilliant example of what we now offer to schools, families, individuals and groups who stay with us. And you don’t need to be a YHA member to stay in our hostels.”

The development of Grinton Lodge is part of YHA’s capital investment programme. Over the past five years YHA has invested £19.5 million in its network of Youth Hostels in England and Wales, creating great value, modern and comfortable accommodation, including en suite facilities.
