Hostel of the Week Archive: YHA Cardiff Central

Let's have a big "Croeso i Gymru" - Welcome to Wales! Our first Welsh Hostel of the Week is YHA Cardiff Central, a stylish new hostel and the perfect place to explore the Welsh capital.

Packed with handy facilities to enhance your break and super close to tempting attractions, this welcoming hostel bustles with well-rested travellers and helpful staff. From murals of local heroes to premium rooms worthy of a hotel, you're bound to leave impressed.

The Hostel

Combining the luxury of its 4-star hotel past with the relaxed and friendly feel of YHA, YHA Cardiff Central is more than a place to stay. You'll find it hard to leave the ales of its well-stocked bar (open until 2am, hooray) and the vibrant velvet armchairs of our comfy lounge. This hostel is seriously proud of its Welsh heritage and visitors love browsing the reception's hand-painted murals of local sayings, famous people and nearby attractions. Convenient facilities like spacious self-catering areas, free Wi-Fi throughout, well-equipped conference rooms, and generous on-site parking make YHA Cardiff Central a first choice for both business and fun. If you're after an extra luxurious stay, try a posh premium room with double bed, TV, hairdryer, towels and desk - all our dorms are en-suite too. And YHA Cardiff Central really IS central, with fantastic transport links to the airport and train station and in walking distance of amazing shopping, nightlife and rambling routes.

City Life

Experience Cardiff at its brilliant best and ask our friendly bar staff to point you towards the best nightlife! Party lovers have easy access to some of the hippest bars in Wales - look out for the huge real ale selection and celebrating sports fans of the City Arms, or the theatrically served bespoke cocktails of Lab 22. Retro Cardiff is a dream night out for anyone who loves old-school 90s tunes and a smiley atmosphere; you might even get a hug from Super Mario on the door! With the four-month-long Cardiff Festival already in full swing, watch the streets fill up with colourful parades, cutting-edge new bands, contemporary theatre and summer family events. Wales has a strong bond with music and the BBC Cardiff Singer of the World competition takes place this week, along with a visit from award-winning comedy Mrs Brown's Boys at the Motorpoint Arena. The regenerated waterfront at Cardiff Bay includes the beautiful Wales Millenium Centre; home to many inspiring theatre, dance and music companies.

Sport and Activities

Cardiff is a must-visit for any sports fan and it was awarded the title of European Capital of Sport in 2014. With the city playing host to some thrilling major events this year, don't miss the Rugby World Cup which takes place in Autumn at the mighty Millennium Stadium - the second-largest stadium in the world. If you just can't wait, from June 26th there'll be a Trophy Tour and celebrations marking the Rugby World Cup countdown reaching 100 days. For keen cricket fans, the infamous Ashes test match comes to Cardiff's SWALEC Stadium this July, and for petrolheads the British FIM Speedway Grand Prix is the hottest event on the Speedway calendar. If you fancy getting active yourself, Bute Park lets you sweat it out in the shadow of Cardiff Castle or you can join the Cardiff Park Run - a free 5km run that happens every Saturday morning at Blackweir. YHA Cardiff Central makes a perfect base for ramblers to take on the Wales coastal path, and the historic Taff Trail makes for a relaxing day out for all levels of cyclists. Boulders Indoor Climbing Centre makes for a fun family day out too.

Family Attractions

If you're fascinated by Welsh culture, you don't need to go far from YHA Cardiff Central to discover the country's rich heritage. You'll need a whole day to visit St. Fagan's National History Museum (don't forget to sample the Bara brith and Welsh cakes) or browse the National Museum and Art Gallery's constantly changing exhibits of some of Wales' finest art. If you need to entertain all ages, Cardiff Castle has plenty of green space for kids to run around in, and there are many fun events in the grounds - look out for a fascinating tour of the building's grisly past! Down at Cardiff Bay, the Doctor Who Experience makes a memorable day out for young and old, just make sure you're prepared for its huge collection of futuristic props and famous monster costumes. Sports fans can even get a tour of the epic Millennium Stadium, and Cardiff's city centre has enough designer shopping to satisfy the emptiest of weekend bags.

So what are you waiting for? Book your stay for a warm Welsh welcome!
