Tony Drake

Tony Drake passed away on 7th March 2012.

Tony was a long serving member of YHA Wales Council and he was the founder of the Cambrian Way, a high level walking route, a member of the Offa's Dyke Association and the Open Spaces society. Tony made a fantastic contribution to Rights of Way in both England and Wales.

He strongly encouraged the use of Youth Hostels to support the Cambrian Way and Offa's Dyke and was the main promoter of the Youth Hostel at Knighton, which opened in 1979 and closed in 1992.

He devised many inter-hostel walking routes and also made sure that they were well waymarked. His map of the Elenith was well used by walkers.

He resourced the provision of framed Ordnance Survey maps at all hostels in Wales and cut and pasted the maps to ensure that the hostel was centrally placed on the map.

He was a regular member of YHA working parties at hostels. He served initially on the YHA South Wales Council and Countryside Committee and latterly on the Wales committees for over 50 years.
