Sleep For Peace 2015

Sleep For Peace 2015

Staying at a HI hostel across the globe this month? Look out for staff and guests celebrating #sleepforpeace!

The Sleep for Peace project, initiated by HI-USA in 2013 and supported by Hostelling International reinforces the message that hostelling contributes to building peace through promoting intercultural understanding amongst young people at home and abroad. This initiative reinforces the purpose of HI by celebrating the peace-building benefits of travel, and staying at HI hostels in particular.

HI hostels around the world will host a variety of activities involving guests, staff and others in commemoration of the UN International Day of Peace, 21 September.

Last year about 16 National Associations and their hostels participated and this year they're hoping to get more people involved than ever!

WHEN? Throughout the week of 21 September 2015 - International Day of Peace, as designated by the United Nations.

WHAT? Throughout this week, many hostels in the HI network and hundreds of not-for-profit organisations around the world join together to promote peace through intercultural understanding and non-violence through a simple of activities and events.

WHY? To raise awareness of the purpose with guests and others, and to unite organisations around a joint effort in line with Hostelling International's mission.

So if you're staying at an international hostel this month, look out for some unique peace-making activities. This could be old bed sheets to leave your handprint on, Peace Books to sign, or some great opportunities for selfies using the #sleepforpeace hashtag. There could even be yoga classes, talent shows and debates.
