The Wanderer - Issue#09 - September 2013
UK map The Young At Heart Edition Dear member,
We're sure you'll agree that this summer has been one to remember. And it got us thinking about other great holidays we've had in the past. So this month we've decided to pack our bags with nostalgia and take a trip down memory lane. From the classic British seaside town, to the perfect English village, you'll find something for everyone – whether you're a child or just a big kid. Just make sure you leave a little space for some new memories.
Oh, and if you start feeling a bit of nostalgia for our old editions along the way, don't forget you can find them all here.
YHA Wells-next-the-sea
YHA Wells-next-the-sea YHA Wells-next-the-sea Wells-next-the-sea in North Norfolk is just how you'd imagine the perfect fishing village. The gentle harbour is filled with small fishing boats and children hunting for crabs with their nets and brightly coloured buckets. You'd be forgiven for thinking it's a scene from a bygone era, but this charming seaside destination has everything the modern holidaymaker could wish for, whether it's an activity break, a relaxing holiday, or just a chance to relive childhood memories.
Something you can't miss is the area's wildlife. Take a boat to the seal colony or put on your wellies and explore the creeks and salt marshes teeming with birdlife. The area is also rich with sea life, some say best served deep fried on the seafront with salt and vinegar. Yes, the local fish 'n' chips are a must.
Work it all off with a stroll (or race if you like) along Holkham beach. At four miles long, it's described as one of the most unspoiled, beautiful stretches of sand in the UK.
For a lesson in history, head to the Bygones Museum at Holkham Hall. Its exhibition of domestic and agricultural memorabilia is the perfect opportunity to step back in time and learn about life in years gone by. But that's the not the only thing on offer from a grand home once described as 'the perfect english house'.
And, of course, as every keen walker will know, the Norfolk Coastal Path runs through Wells. So if you're passing through on the way to Sheringham, stop off at YHA Wells-next-the-sea for the night. Bagsy top bunk.

YHA Stow-on-the-Wold
Stow away in stow This Grade II listed 17th century townhouse is in historic Stow-on-the-Wold, a market town perched on top of a 700 foot hill overlooking the rolling hills of the Cotswolds. Once upon a time sheep were herded in their thousands through its narrow cobbled streets on market day, nowadays, however, with its wildlife parks and quirky vintage museums, the town is the perfect break for the two-legged visitor.
Start by getting back in touch with your wild side at The Cotswold Wildlife Park and Gardens. Home to over 260 species, it's the largest privately owned zoological collection in the UK. Oh, and there's also 160 acres of landscaped gardens to tire out big and little legs alike.
If the roar of an engine is more your thing, check out the Cotswold Motoring Museum and Toy collection. This motley collection of vintage cars and motoring curiosities from a time forgotten is sure to fire up any petrol head.
Or forget the wheels altogether, and stroll to neighbouring Moreton-in-Marsh or Bourton-on-the-Water and into a Constable-like setting. Whether it's your first time visiting this part of the world, or the one hundredth time, it never fails to take your breath away.
At the end of the day reward yourself with a freshly prepared meal from our country café, a cream tea, or a pint of locally brewed ale. Cheers.

YHA South Downs
YHA South Downs YHA South Downs The South Downs in Sussex is our next stop. Opened last year, the hostel sits right on the South Downs Way, nestled within the green hilled heart of the South Downs National Park. Modernity feels a million miles away, but it's closer than you think, with Brighton just 20 minutes up the road.
So, if after a bit of much needed rest and relaxation in our beautiful refurbished Sussex farmhouse you fancy a night out on the town, Brighton's 400 restaurants and lively nightlife should provide ample entertainment for the hidden hedonist inside.
In late October, nearby Hastings holds the World Crazy Golf Championships. £25 gets you 6 rounds to prove your mettle against giant windmills and pirate ships. Great for the kids, but when there is a £1000 prize at stake it's a good time to take the crazy rather more seriously.
You're never too old or young to learn something new and being near the sea is the perfect time to submerge yourself in one of the growing water sports available to all abilities. There is the majestically named Newhaven Marina to more quaint Piddinghoe Pond, both a short distance from the hostel.
For the through and through land lovers, there's the South Downs Way. A popular walk with both the serious rambler wanting to tackle the whole route, and the weekend stroller, happy to cherry pick sections with the best views. Whichever one you are, grab the chance to be at one with nature and get your fill of mile after mile of stunning scenery.

YHA Scarborough
Halcyon and on and on...Our final trip down memory lane is Scarborough. The name alone, conjures thoughts of pastel pink candyfloss and, if you close your eyes and listen carefully, you might just hear arcade games chiming in the distance. Because this is the classic British seaside holiday resort, and the perfect location to refresh those hazy holiday memories.
Of course, it's not all donkey rides, Punch and Judy and Esmeralda the fortune teller. Once you've had your fill of reminiscing about the good old days, there's more contemporary seaside activities to be getting on with.
There's surfing, kite surfing, sea swimming and kayaking on Scarborough's North and South beaches and at Cayton Bay. And the good news is that lessons and taster sessions cater for all ages and abilities, so grab your towel and leave your excuses at the hostel, which is just a 10-minute walk from the North Bay.
If, however, you'd prefer to watch a more advanced species do the water sports, we suggest you take trip to Scarborough's Sea life and Marine Sanctuary, and watch the penguins and seals show you how it's done. There are over 50 displays of marine life and the chance to get hands on rock pool experience - just watch out for those crabs.
As it turns out, it's not just the British holidaymaker who likes a seaside resort, the Romans and Vikings did too. Just two miles from the YHA hostel and still dominating the headland is one thousand year-old Scarborough Castle with its mind blowing panoramic view of the coastline, creating memories that will last a lifetime.

YHA Pen-Y-Pass Vote for us Hostelling International is offering £25,000 to support one youth hostel in their mission to reduce CO2 emissions. We're delighted that our biomass boiler project at YHA Pen-Y-Pass in Snowdonia has made it to the shortlist: but now we need your help to secure the prize.
This project would reduce carbon emissions by 92.2 CO2e tonnes annually. This is the equivalent of the emissions from an average car travelling 444,478km, or more than 11 times around the world.
The eco project with the most votes wins. And we really want to win. So take a look at what we're doing and give us your support! Please vote for YHA (England & Wales) here before the 30th September 2013.
