YHA Named as Top Organisation to Work For

YHA (England and Wales) is celebrating after being named one of the country’s top employers in a national newspaper. The charity came 69th in The Sunday Times 100 Best-Not–For–Profit Organisations to Work for List in 2014.

YHA (England and Wales), which employs around 800 people across its head office and 160 Youth Hostels, was given the accolade after staff gave it glowing reviews in an impartial survey carried out by The Sunday Times. Staff feedback resulted in YHA being placed above UNICEF UK and the National Trust in the 2014 list.

Staff feedback to the survey revealed that 76% of employees agree that YHA has a strong social conscience, 78% of staff said their bosses talked openly and honestly with them, 75% of staff enjoy working for the YHA and, 83% have fun in their teams.

The prestigious listing acknowledges excellence in workplace engagement and it is only the organisations with the highest level of overall engagement that qualify for the list.

Speaking about the Sunday Times listing Caroline White, YHA (England & Wales) Chief Executive said: “We are thrilled to be nationally recognised as a top employer. The survey is both confidential and completely impartial, so knowing that so many of our staff love their job and being part of YHA confirms what our members and customers say – that our people help make us really special."

The charity entered the running after receiving the Investors in People (IiP) Gold Standard last year, putting the charity in the top 2% of organisations across the UK that have achieved the prestigious accolade.

The independent IiP assessment and report, which covered 1500 volunteer and paid staff across all locations, praised YHA saying: “One of the results is that the overwhelming number of people now say, unequivocally, that the YHA is a GREAT place to work.”

The Gold standard is only given to organisations who can demonstrate excellence in developing and supporting their staff and follows after rigorous reporting and review by an independent assessor.

YHA (England and Wales) was established in 1930 and now ranks as one of the top 50 charities in the UK. With around 160 Youth Hostels throughout England and Wales, YHA has invested more than £13 million in its network since 2012, helping create great value, modern and comfortable accommodation which is open to everyone.
