YHA - Investing in the future

YHA‘s investment in our Youth Hostels, throughout England and Wales, will help the organisation fulfil our vision of enhancing the lives of all young people.

During the last three years, sustained growth in occupancy, yield and income has enabled YHA to invest £30 million in our Youth Hostels to ensure we have accommodation in the right places, and our properties are maintained to appropriate standards which meet our guests’ expectations.

We currently have 183 youth hostels in our network; we have opened three brand new hostels in the last 18 months, have undertaken major refurbishments at a further four, have part refurbished 20 sites, and extended our range of alternative accommodation at 16 different hostels. A total of 79 Youth Hostels have benefited from this investment which is in addition to our ongoing maintenance programme.

YHA is confident that the plans will ensure a new generation of young people will be introduced to the benefits of staying with YHA and that our members and customers will have an improved experience.

We are delighted that our recent success will enable us to invest in the following Youth Hostels:

- YHA Bath
- YHA New Forest
- YHA St David’s
- YHA Tanners Hatch
- YHA The Sill at Hadrian's Wall
- YHA Liverpool
- YHA Hartington Hall
- YHA Treyarnon
- YHA London St Paul’s
- YHA London Thameside
- YHA Eden Project

As a result of the investment planning a number of Youth Hostels will be closed. Decisions regarding the sale of Youth Hostels are never easy and the Board of Trustees has explored options in relation to individual sites before reaching their decision. Affected staff have been informed and YHA is working closely with them during a consultation period.

In making this decision we have looked very carefully at the costs of running each Youth Hostel and the investment which will be required to ensure we are providing the facilities and services needed at that location.

As a charity, we need to ensure that our resources are targeted at providing the best experience for people who benefit from our work. The demand from members and customers to stay in particular locations changes over time. This means that some locations have very low occupancy throughout the year and have become unsustainable as part of our network.

The proposal to close these hostels is no reflection on the managers and their teams who in very difficult economic conditions have maintained an excellent service to our customers. It is the genuine desire of YHA to seek to redeploy staff to other locations in accordance with the agreed recruitment and selection process.

The Board approved the proposal to close the following hostels:

- YHA Dimmingsdale
- YHA Woody’s Top
- YHA Earby

Customers who have bookings at these sites are being contacted by our reservations staff to ensure there is the minimum of disruption to their YHA experience.
