Derby County Club Captain Shaun Barker Doing His Bit For Charity

Derby County Club Captain Shaun Barker may be facing the huge challenge of battling back to full fitness following a serious knee injury, but he’s also set himself another ambitious challenge this season – to raise money for charity.

The 29-year-old central defender and defensive linchpin sustained knee ligament damage during Derby’s 1-0 home win over Nottingham Forest towards the end of last season, and was immediately ruled out for the entire 2012-13 season as a result.
Barker will spend his time not only on his gruelling rehabilitation programme this season, but by also aiming to raise funds and awareness for charities alongside Derby County.
The first challenge will see the popular captain take part in a sponsored head shave.

He will have his flowing locks removed at half-time on the Pride Park pitch when Derby take on Burnley at Pride Park Stadium on Saturday 22nd September in the npower Championship.
Barker is calling on Rams fans to dig deep to donate and help him reach his £1,000 target, with the proceeds to be split 50/50 to Rainbows Hospice for Children and YHA’s Breaks for Kids charity which funds youth and school trips for children from low income households to its network of Youth Hostels in England and Wales.

Shaun said: “I want to make the most of the fact that my weeks aren’t structured by matches and during the summer I spoke to the Club about getting involved with Charity work. We have a responsibility to help raise awareness of certain charities, attend different functions and to represent the Club in the right way.

“I felt in my time off I could do a bit more towards raising money and get more involved with charities of my choice. My first solo effort for raising money is to have my hair shaved off!

“I’ve considered it for a while whether to get the clippers on my beautifully conditioned head of hair and although there are trepidations of getting rid of it, I realise it could be a perfect way to raise funds for those in desperate need of help. I’ve had lots of stick about my hair in the last two years, so for those who have urged me to cut it; I expect a healthy donation!”

Ben from Ben Brown Salon at Cathedral Quarter Derby will do the honours at the Burnley game on the pitch. Ben is a Derby County fan and as well as cutting off Shaun’s hair, he has kindly offered to donate 20% of his takings on the day of the Burnley game – he’s even opening late to take as much as possible!

The action will be screened live on the Big Screen at the interval of the Burnley game, so supporters can see the action unfold up close and personal!

“The idea of sitting on my backside all season giving nothing back to the Club, the fans and fantastic charities I’ve been privileged enough to encounter is unforgivable. Throughout the year and whatever I decide to do next, please donate generously to help some of the people a little less fortunate than ourselves,” added Shaun.
