VisitEngland compiling list of England's best attractions

Wondering what to do for a holiday this summer? Want to save some money by staying in Britain but don't know what is on offer? Fear not, because a new website should have the answers - 101 of them, in fact.

National tourism body VisitEngland has been busy building a list of the best activities in England, labelling it '101 Things to do before you go abroad'. And rather than a collection of things put forward by attractions with big marketing budgets, the suggestions have been submitted by regular Britons, based on their own experiences.

The entries have now been collected and will be judged by five well-known experts choosing their favourite 20 from within their specialist categories. The jurors include wildlife and nature expert Bill Oddie, BBC 2's Culture Show regular Clemency Burton-Hill and Michelin-starred chef Skye Gyngell. You can now vote on what experiences you would like to win the overall prize on the event website, and extracts from the final list will be released by VisitEngland later this month, during National Tourism Week, before it is unveiled in full on St George's Day (April 23rd).

Events highlighted so far include visiting the Farne Islands to watch baby seals and puffins, and visiting a llama farm in Sidmouth, Devon. Alternatively, you see some really wild life at a secluded safari park in Nottinghamshire, and there are many more useful suggestions being traded by visitors to the group's Facebook page, giving parents enough activities and ideas to fill ten summers.

James Berresford, VisitEngland's chief executive, said ahead of the list's compilation: "Only including 101 Things to do in England before you go abroad will be the challenge! There is so much on offer in England which is capable of taking our breath away."

Wherever you choose to go this summer, why not make a weekend of it with a stay at one of YHA's great-value hostels?
