Spirit of Kinder Day to mark 1932 Trespass

These days we are free to go out and explore large swathes of the British countryside at our leisure, but it's easy to forget that things weren't always this way.

In 1932, a group of keen ramblers defied access laws to walk on Kinder Scout in the Peak District, beginning a campaign by the Ramblers Association for legal access to the British countryside. The National Parks and Access to the Countryside Act 1949 was the first step towards providing access to places of natural beauty in England and Wales.

To commemorate these original trailblazers, the Kinder & High Peak Advisory Group held series of walking events last year on and around Kinder Scout. Now the group has decided to make Spirit of Kinder an annual walking event, with this year's instalment taking place on April 27th.

Chair Roy Smith said: "The amount of interest in our event last year convinced us that we should have an annual event to keep this tremendous interest going."

As well as guided walks tracing the footsteps of the original trespassers, there will be talks from Keith Warrender, publisher of The Battle for Kinder Scout, Jon Stewart, manager of the National Trust's Peak District estate and Ramblers president Kate Ashbrook.
