Experience the joys of spring with a dawn chorus walk

With spring having finally sprung, the British countryside is starting to come to life with flowering plants and the sound of birdsong. If you want to hear the dawn chorus in all its glory, there is a wide range of nature walks across the country which will let you enjoy this thrilling experience.

Countryfile Magazine has helpfully rounded up some of the best guided dawn chorus walks coming up this spring, so even amateur ornithologists can enjoy the events with expert guidance.
First on the list is the Dawn Chorus Ramble at Gibside, Tyne and Wear, on April 29th. Starting at 5.30am, a National Trust ranger will be the guide as you stroll across the Gibside estate with the rising sun, listening to the song of various birds - and perhaps even seeing the odd roe deer.

Mortehoe in Devon will also host a dawn chorus walk on May 5th, with a two-and-a-half-hour trek down through the Kinever Valley to Bull Point, with regular stops to truly appreciate the various birds inhabiting this area of north Devon. Admission is just £4 for adults, and kids can participate for free.

The following day, May 6th, has a wide range of nature walks for you to choose from. Early-morning dawn chorus walks are taking place at the Godolphin Estate in Cornwall, Sheringham Park in Norfolk, Winkworth Arboretum in Surrey and at popular day-out destination Brimham Rocks in North Yorkshire, where a three-mile stroll will bring you in touch with resident and migrant birds, providing the perfect warm-up before trying out some climbing and abseiling on the famous stones.

Later in the month, events at Calke Abbey in Derbyshire (May 12th and 13th), Knightshayes Court in Devon and Sissinghurst Castle in Kent (both May 20th) give you another chance to enjoy early-morning birdsong in the company of expert local guides.

If any of these events appeal to you, look into booking a stay at a local YHA hostel, to ensure you are rested and ready to appreciate the beautiful spring morning.
