50 years of the Pennine Way

50 years of the Pennine Way

Happy Birthday to the Pennine Way - it's 50 years old today! The very first National Trail remains one of the most spectacular and well-loved of all the trails and it still attracts hundreds of thousands of people every year. Starting at Edale and ending at Kirk Yetholm on the Scottish Border, it stretches for 268 miles and can take around 16-19 days to walk in full.

There are a host of celebratory events going on over 24th – 26th May and, with many YHA hostels along the route, this is the perfect excuse to get out there for a ramble. With lots of different terrains and environments to tackle (tranquil villages, mountain tops, river valleys and more), the famous long-distance trail has something for everyone. Here's a taster of what's happening over the anniversary weekend:

  • On Saturday 25th, walkers from across the country will be joining together to walk the entire 268 miles in one day! 50 walks have been created for walkers to complete.
  •
  • In Edale, there'll be a series of events over the weekend including talks, live music, craft activities and locally brewed ale. How about resting your head at YHA Edale?
  •
  • The Dales Countryside Museum near YHA Hawes is hosting an exhibition about the Pennine Way and there'll be an online art gallery of 50 sketches and paintings.
  •
  • If you're around on Sunday 26th, join us at YHA Langdon Beck for brunch and a guided walk to the Bowlees Visitor Centre, taking in two iconic waterfalls on the way.

You can take a look at the full listing of special events here. Also there'll be lots of television and radio coverage about the Pennine Way this month, so look out for BBC programs and radio slots to celebrate this amazing walk.

YHA has been vital for making the Pennine Way possible for walkers over the years. In fact, 20 years ago it was possible to do the whole length of the walk using just YHA hostels! The Pennine Way shares our aims of getting people into the countryside and you're sure to find plenty of keen ramblers staying with us. YHA Edale, YHA Mankinholes, YHA Haworth, YHA Earby, YHA Malham, YHA Hawes, YHA Langdon Beck, YHA Dufton and YHA Once Brewed are all waiting for you on the trail...

Do you have any fond memories of hostelling on the Pennine Way? Send us your photos to socialmedia@yha.org.uk and we'll share them with pride!
