Exe Mead was a large Victorian villa that sat across from the original YHA Exford Cottages. Exe Mead was built around the 1890s as a wedding present, however the recipient never got married. In 1944, the hostel was used by American soldiers and converted into a makeshift barracks for six months.
YHA acquired the hostel in 1964 and opened very quickly, however the hostel needed substantial work and wouldn't have an official opening until early in 1966.
There are currently no volunteering opportunities at YHA Exford. Please visit YHA Volunteering to see what opportunities are available.
Manager recommends: After a day of activities or walking the moor, come back to the hostel and try stargazing. In this beautiful area of Exmoor National Park, the stars are amazingly clear.
