From our beginning in 1930 YHA has grown to be one of the top 50 charities with a diverse network of hostels, often in exceptional places, open to everyone and especially young people.

“To help all, especially young people of limited means, to a greater knowledge, love and care of the countryside, and appreciation of the cultural values of towns and cities, particularly by providing Youth Hostels or other accommodation for them in their travels, and thus to promote their health, recreation and education”

With three Councils in England and one in Wales, this is an ideal way for anyone to get involved in YHA’s work through a regular programme of meetings and events around the country.

YHA has 15 Trustees, each serving a maximum of two terms of three years. All are volunteers. They are elected by the AGM and their role is to determine policy ensure the proper management of YHA and provide effective guidance and leadership to the CEO, Executive Team and employees.

Trustees appoint the Chief Executive who with four directors is charged with delivering YHA’s plans to achieve the object and bring to life our vision of reaching out and enhancing the lives of young people.

YHA’s governance starts at grass roots level with our members. Our democratic structure means members can influence and help develop policy through joining one of our four Councils covering Northern, Central and Southern England and Wales. The Councils nominate delegates to attend and vote at the AGM, where Board members are elected and motions debated.

The early days of YHA are a fascinating story of determination and unlimited enthusiasm for a cause whose time had come. YHA’s Historical Archive is now publicly available at the Cadbury Research Library at the University of Birmingham.
