During this 5 day 4 night Residential you will have plenty of opportunity to develop your surfing skills as well as getting involved in some volunteer activities around the hostel and learning a bit about the Pembrokeshire National Park .
Cost of residential £290 which includes all meals (including breakfast, packed lunches and evening meals), accommodation and all activities. Course runs 20th - 24th February.
The residential will meet the criteria for the Gold DofE Award but please remember that you should aim to join the residential as an individual – group bookings will not be accepted.

Canoe Expedition

Get out and get active with our great weekend canoe expedition. We lead you on a trip down the River Exe estuary, and full tuition is given, so no previous paddling experience is necessary! This trip allows you to see wild-life from the river with overnight camp at the Turf Locks camp site on the River Exe estuary. Tents and camping equipment supplied and taken direct to the campsite so no worries about getting your gear wet. There are a few 'rapids' to descend, to add to the excitement of the trip.

Discover Kayaking for improvers

Discover Kayaking for Improvers (BCU 2 star)
A 2-day course suitable for those with previous paddling skills and some recent paddling experience.
The course is open to those over 12 years old accompanied by an adult participant, as the autumn water conditions can be cold. Resident Rate includes 2 nights Full Board Accommodation and 2 days of instruction. On the first day you will usually cover further sessions about safety on the water, suitable technqiues for paddling river 2/3 conditions, and what to do if you capsize. Then you will have a second kayak day on a local river returning to the Youth Hostel arriving mid afternoon for a final debrief from Leader.
The rivers used will vary depending on river conditions and the experience of the participants. A safe session extending your skills will be our priority. Several of our instructors are have advanced coaching certificates and spend their spare time exploring different white water rivers in south-west England, north Wales, and various countries around the world.

Discover Kayaking for Beginners (BCU 1 star)
This 2 day course meets the requirements for BCU 1 Star.
The price includes 2 days accommodation at YHA Okehampton (or YHA Bracken Tor), tuition and equipment. There will be a "getting to know you" session, where the instructor will get information about your past experience of Kayaking and Canoeing. On the first day you will usually cover safety on the water, how to launch your boat, basic principle of paddling, how to turn your boat and what to do if you capsize.
The one star syllabus involves paddling both a canoe and kayak and you will have an opportunity to paddle both crafts. Day 2 we proceed to a new paddling venue for a day trip and to extend your skills.

Coasteering Experience

For the ultimate adrenaline rush, join us on a coasteering adventure! Coasteering includes a combination of traversing across rocks, wading through rock pools, sea swimming, negotiating rock jumps and exploring caves. There is no better way to get up close and personal with marine life than coasteering. Cornwall has such a beautiful coastline it is fantastic to see it from a different point of view, explore nooks and crannies and experience the rise and fall of the ocean. Stand Up Paddleboard Experience

One of the fastest growing activities in the UK paddleboarding involves standing on a super wide, long board and propelling yourself through the water using a long blade. This great new activity is healthy, invigorating and promotes balance, strength and general fitness. Paddleboarding is low impact, easier to learn than surfing and attainable for everyone, suitable for individuals, couples, families and groups.No experience is necessary, you don’t have to be a surfer or adrenaline junkie to learn the newest and fastest growing adventure sport around. Intermediate kayaking

If you have kayaked before this course will give you a chance to improve your skills and learn some more advanced strokes. Specifically we will look at moving the kayak through the water efficiently and rescuing other paddlers. There will be an opportunity to take the British Canoe Union Two Star award towards the end of the weekend.
All our courses take advantage of the best water available in the Peak District. We are a BCU approved centre, using high quality equipment and have highly qualified staff.
