Welsh offer

Discover our plans to improve the use of the Welsh language across YHA

We recognise our responsibilty to visitors to Wales to hear, see and experience the Welsh language as part of their introduction or reintroduction to Wales.

We recognise the need to connect with the communities, people and places in which our hostels are located and play more of a role in the culture, heritage and lived experience of those living, working and visting our areas.

Our strategy for YHA in Wales recognises the early beginnings of YHA which began in North Wales in the 1920s.

YHA committed to a series of pledges as part of this strategy. One pledge outlined our intentions to improve the use of the Welsh language across our organisation and our Welsh offer details the actions that will make sure we deliver this pledge.

Our Welsh offer

  • YHA will provide a Welsh welcome for guests and visitors across our hostels in Wales; recognising the role we play in introducing Wales' rich cultural heritage to first time and regular visitors to Wales.
  • YHA will support and encourage Welsh in the workplace; making sure staff and volunteers are aware of training and resources available to increase the use of Welsh (formally and informally) at work.
  • YHA welcomes communication in Welsh or English, and we will offer the opportunity for our guests and members to communicate with us in Welsh wherever it is possible and practical to do so.
  • For public events that are delivered specifically in Wales, we will provide bi-lingual materials and communications.
  • For job opportunities in the Wales network, all roles will be advertised bi-lingually and Welsh language skills will be a desirable criteria.
